Probably very basic, but please could anybody advise what this plant is, which has happily thrown up new shoots all around a bare stump? For context, up until last summer, the ground it is on was extremely dark (and probably nutrient-deprived), being overshadowed by some enormous leylandii. I had the leylandii cut down last year - very expensive but made the garden feel about three times bigger once done! Initially, I panicked that the above might be one of the leylandii re-growing, but for lots of reasons I'm fairly sure it isn't that. I know there was some elder around, being dwarfed by the leylandii, and a tree surgeon commented that the elder would bounce back fine. I've been assuming the woody shrub behind the plant I'm asking about is elder. Wondering if the plant I'm asking about also is? Or, have I got what the woody plant is wrong?

Many thanks in advance for any help

I reckon that's elder too. Definitely not leylandi!

If you don't want elder (and it can grow huge and spreads) just keep cutting off the new shoots regularly or use glyphosate.

          Thank you everybody.

          Follow-up question, then:

          IMG_0466.jpg

Is the straggly, woody plant behind also likely to be elder? Or is that something else?

          Agree on elder.
I have killed a stump by pulling off any shoots as soon as I saw them. Took a couple of years though.

Didn't see the follow up question - yes it looks like elder branches to me, they have that rough texture and colour.

Close-ups of the new shoots and leaves coming from the straggly woody plant. As with the plant I was originally asking about, this plant was very deprived of light for quite a long time up until last year, because there were enormous leylandii right next to it. (So, whatever this plant is, I assume it was dying off due to lack of light and nutrients, but is now managing some new shoots because the leylandii are gone.)

It's most likely Clematis vitalba, sometimes called Old Man's Beard. It can be rampant and get about in your garden.

May I ask if those leaves are definitely coming from the woody plant? The leaves don't look the same as the elder or clematis vitalba to me.

They do look like something I know, except I just can't think of the name right now! Maybe @Plantminded could help?

The shrub looks like the suffocated remains of something. Possibly a deutzia or weigelia.

"Suffocated remains" definitely fits, given the size of the leylandii and the fact they were just next to this plant before being removed. The new shoots pictured are definitely coming from the woody suffocated remains. I will probably leave it as is for a while and see what happens so might be able to post an update in a few months ... (In response to Spruce, I'm not sure if it's ever flowered. Up until the leylandii were removed, I couldn't really get to where it was, and the area was very dark. There have sometimes been elder flowers in that area, but we've now established that the other plant is an elder, so not sure if the woody one has produced any flowers.)

That shrub has a look of philadelphus about it.
