My first memory of roses as a child is when we moved out of a semi into a big house with quite a large garden. There was a tennis court (unusable as it was mainly moss and the posts were rusted away) and below that a rectangular bed with a weeping standard rose in it. The rose had beautiful long sprays of deep red smallish flowers. I remember it flowering all summer but I was young so that could be wrong. But I have never yet found anything similar.
I never thought to ask my parents what it was but in any case they hadn't planted it - it was there when we moved in. We only lived there about 3 years as my dad got transferred from Lancashire to Derbyshire and we moved to Macclesfield, where I am still. The house is now a care home, or it was last time I looked.

Never seen so many greenflies on the roses. They had been a load in the trees where I play football, get a nice mouthful if you run with your mouth open:eeew:.

Tempted to buy a new austin yesterday roald dahl only £20 cheap for a DA potted rose.

Saddly one of my clients husband passed a couple of weeks ago I were think of picking up a rose for her when the time is right.

My roses were covered in greenfly too @Perki. They don't seem to do any damage and they seem to disappear when the buds start opening.

I’ve seen some greenfly on mine, too, but a combination of the birds picking at them and me wiping them off seem to have reduced their number a bit.
The weeping rose sounds pretty @katecat58. Perhaps someone might be along with a suggestion as to which standard it might have been. Do you remember if it had a fragrance?

Sorry @Debs64, I meant to message you to let you know. And you already have contributed to this one!

@Blue arbour, I'm honestly not sure about fragrance but I think it probably did.

As far as greenfly are concerned I tend to leave them for the ladybirds and small birds to sort out. The only exception are lupin aphids which I rub off the plant, I have heard ladybirds don’t eat them.
All my roses are DA and chosen for scent first then colour. I grow them all in pots or containers and they do pretty well.
I am lucky to live fairly close to DA gardens and visit at least once a year and more if the bank balance permits. It’s a beautiful place and the food is delicious.

@Debs64, most of mine are in pots too. I don't have much room in the ground. Very glad to see the rain this weekend!
Your Emily Bronte is lovely. I only have one DA, The Country Parson, and I'm still waiting for flowers from him this year.

Hello... This is Marlorena, some of you may know me from elsewhere and familiar with my garden of roses... I took some general photos today, these are some of my favourite companion plantings..
I am currently untroubled by aphids or molluscs and I've only seen a few sawflies, which are my main troublemaker where roses are concerned..

Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus, a scented yellow Daylily, and early flowerer.. a young 'Kew Gardens' rose and a French red climbing rose..
                        IMG_6586.JPG
..the other way, I have it with Clematis 'Westerplatte' and 'H.F. Young'..
                        IMG_6587.JPG
'Bring Me Sunshine' is just starting to flower.. I have it close to white Hesperis matronalis..
IMG_6594.JPG I love French lavender in pots, and I've tried several.. this one 'Victory' I think is my favourite..
                        IMG_6574.JPG
Penstemon 'Westminster Belle' is so good with roses for its colour and early, yet long flowering season.. tall, wind resistant spires..
                        IMG_6593.JPG
..simple Lychnis coronaria, Iris pallida 'Argentea'.. rose 'Desdemona'..
                        IMG_6592.JPG
Lilac pink 'Lucky' a floribunda with Clematis 'Souvenir du Capitaine Thuilleaux'..
