Currently carbon capture is untested on a large scale, it is expensive, not particularly efficient and they don't really know what they can do with it when they've captured it. Do put it down old oil wells? Shove it into an old salt mine or similar or what.
There are some technologies looking to see if they can convert the carbon dioxide into something useful like plastics or fuels.

There is, of course, a tried and tested (and relatively low cost) carbon capture device that can be scaled up quite successfully, depending on the available space. Plus, in some cases, the same devices can aid in geo-stabilisation and water interception. ;)

Why don't they just collect the carbon and turn it into diamonds :dunno:

Nah, the only diamonds involved are the ones that line Ed Milliband's arse

In Iceland they have a couple of plants that capture and store carbon, but the cost is far greater, roughly £750 to capture and store 1 tonne of carbon. The company that runs both Orca and Mammoth carbon facilities run on green energy, zero emissions. To capture and store 1 tonne of carbon for scaled up machines would require 2,650 kWh to capture and store 1 tonne of carbon.

They say Orca is capable of capturing 4,000 tonnes of carbon annually with Mammoth being capable of capturing 36,000 tonne.

‘Orca,’ the largest carbon removal facility to date, is now in service

All might sound good, but along with these new plants and the Data companies that have relocated to Iceland, does the supply meet the demand.

Iceland has been developing different geothermal generation systems for some decades.
One reason for data centres moving there is that being in the far north cooling is cheaper as they can use cold air rather than warmer air if they were further south.
The cost of cooling is why some data companies are considering building underwater centres.

Or ... we could stop saving so much data. Every email since the dawn of the internet is still in existence. Completely pointless, especially giving the resources needed for retention.

Meanwhile, my moan is ... magpies ... at 4.50 am ... within metres of my bedroom window! :th scifD36: One of nature's uglier sounds. Makes the constant pigeon cooing sound almost musical.

Or do away with mobile phones :heehee:.

The power consumption and its concomitant CO2 production in actually manufacturing the phone and it's continued power consumption, plus the energy consumption of the networks and data centres is reported to produce CO2 in excess of that of the world's airline industry.

Unfortunately you can't put the genie back in the bottle. :noidea:
