I'd be happy to have bullfinches taking the fruit crops because they are stunning little birds that we never see around here. We only really get sparrows, have a flock of 40-50 which dominate things. The great tits are just about finished with their second brood in the back garden, where the sparrows rarely venture and we have wrens nesting as well I think. The blackbirds chose next doors side of the hedge this year. Our neighbour kept saying they love watching the black caps on the feeder in the morning and it baffled me because I've never seen one around here but then I figured out they meant great tits but wouldn't say tit.
Saw a lovely green woodpecker checking out our lawn for ant nests this morning. I haven’t seen any bull finches recently, and not as many nuthatches as previous years. Lots of siskins at the feeder though. Annoyingly, we appear to have two young seagulls who have set up home nearby. They often arrive on our roof at daybreak, and tap dance on the tiles. We have a family of crows who turn up every morning to eat the nuts we throw to them for breakfast. Now, one or other of the seagulls will sit and wait as well, and I’m not feeding them! I managed to clean off the mess they made on our bedroom window, but I now see there is another big smear on the bathroom window. I’ll have to get my long handled window cleaning thingy out again!
We haven’t seen our nuthatches either @Ergates usually they are regular daily visitors. I do hope they are ok
Premier Moe of Saskatchewan has officially announced that the wildfires there have been proven to be ALL caused by humans. Most were not intentionally started but they are now arresting the people who set out to start the rest. What the hell is wrong with these people? They know the dangers of being careless but.. And as for the arsonists, I hope they make them known. First Nation peoples can be very brutal to their own!
Indeed @CanadianLori . Scum doesn't even begin to describe them. I hope they dish out suitable punishments if they get them. I can't get my head round the motivation of arsonists at all. We've had wildfires here in the west of Scotland due to the weird weather for many weeks in |April/May, and it's an incredibly rare thing in the west due to our normally damp climate. Again- they don't just magically start by themselves. I expect the number of visitors over Easter is part of the reason too. Arran [island off the west coast] has been devastated, and the damage to all the wildlife has been horrific.
As a nature lover who walks in the woods with my dog twice a day, fire is the thing that scares me. This year I have seen more black burnt areas where people have either tried to start fires or chucked something still lit. It is such an idiotic thing to do that would cause far reaching damage and I just don't see the mentality. We had small front garden fires started by some idiot youths and nothing was done about it.
Breakfast bakewell? Try these cherry baked oats The best that the BBC can come up with when the country is struggling with obesity. What are they thinking of????
It's a bit optimistic to expect them to be "thinking", @Tidemark. The BBC has never claimed to be "on the side of the people who pay for us".
Keep hearing Oats are for putting weight on. Focusing on protein items for breakfast is better, and fruit.
They love to promote body positivity even when said body is very unhealthy. I find the ethics of that approach a little but dodgy. Being comfortable in ones skin, excepting birthmarks, blemishes or wrinkles is different imo.
Here are the ingredients for a dish that they say serves four people for one breakfast. No carbohydrate or fat or calorie content is given for this “breakfast” dish recipe. While each of the ingredients in themselves is perhaps healthy enough, as a combined mass they do not give me confidence in their ability to help people maintain a long term healthy body weight.
So what's the big one in there that is going to pile on the pounds. Presumably a lot depends on what you are doing, someone doing manual work is not going to get by on a lettuce leaf and a cup of black coffee for breakfast.
