    Hello,

    Novice gardener.

Was looking for an evergreen narrow shrub to fill a space in UK city garden.

Came across japanese sky pencil holly.

    2 questions.....

    1) Would this shrub be ok with only late afternoon direct sunlight during summer? where I plan to put it gets lots of indirect bright light but little direct sun (where the bucket is in pics).

    2) I plan to grow in a pot and would like to grow to a maximum of six foot. Any idea what size pot I may be looking at to do that?

Many Thanks in advance Image 2.jpeg

To keep a tree happy in that space, the container would need to be big enough to fill the width of the space. So big. Watering to keep a tree alive would be a major job.

Why not just train your star jasmine to cover the rest of the panel?
They will grow into huge plants.

Im keen to have something different in that corner.

The star jamine is on every fence and at the end of the garden will grow up a near 8 ft pergola, so for me thats enough.

I like the look of some of the shrubs that can be trimmed into pencil type shapes to add height without sticking out too far.

    Fair enough.
Have a look at Italian Pencil Cypress as another alternative.
My neighbour has 3 in large pots and they've been happy enough in large pots for the 5-6 yrs that they've had them.
They won't need any pruning to keep in shape either.

I think they need a fair amount of direct sun though don’t they?

I'd have thought so too, but the 3 my neighbour has are by their north-facing front door.
They do get a couple of hours sun early morning in the summer, but the rest of the year there in shade but get reasonably decent light.
