A good choice for a first rose @Meomye mine is special to me too as I bought it the day after my beautiful dog passed away to commemorate her.

I’ve just noticed these white flowers on my Malvern Hills rambling rose. They all seem to be coming from one stem which I presume is from the root stock?
Should I cut this stem off at ground level? I don’t mind the different flowers but I’m wondering if it will eventually take over the rose?

It is certainly a vigorous rose. I planted one two years ago, it was a bare root seconds for a couple of quid, and it's grown perhaps 4-5m in every direction with multiple side branches, where I've attempted to train it. Luckily it was bought to block a large garage and it's doing a good job already. I like the small, simple flowers but it's a shame it only blooms once.

Yes that's a sucker. You will have to remove it to stop it from taking over. They can be tough to pull out, I usually try and go a little beneath the soil to get to it, but not always possible. You just might have to cut it off, but it's liable to grow back so you need to keep an eye on that.

Does anyone grow Lark ascending? I found images of it whilst researching roses for my mum. Would it be happy in a larger pot?

I don't grow it myself but it is said to get pretty big. In theory any rose can be grown in a pot if the pot is large enough, but it doesn't sound like a very good candidate I think.

It’s described by David Austin as a very large shrub and isn’t included in a search on their site for roses suitable for containers. If you’re looking for an apricot coloured rose, try Roald Dahl, the buds are orange and the flower matures from apricot to pale yellow. I’ve put mine in the ground but it is listed as suitable for a container. Other options include Grace and Dannahue.

Thanks. I think I'll have to give it a miss then. Not much room left in the garden for a big rose and dont want it to struggle in a pot. Thanks for the recommendation, I wanted an open rose for bees, and liked the name because it's a beautiful peace of music.

I was looking at David Austin's website again last night and decided that I have space for two new roses . I've ordered Lady of Shallot which I grew when I moved here 12 years ago, and Vanessa Bell. They are the right colours for the location but I'm also looking for a rose with a similar colour as the Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff, if one exists. I wondered whether the Harkness rose, Chelsea Pensioner, might be an option and would welcome any thoughts.

Ballerina, just starting to flower but it doesn’t get quite as much sun as it would probably like.

Desdemona, I think the flowers look like they’re made from porcelain.

@CatDouch, I thought I had Ballerina but looking at your pic, mine doesn't look anything like yours. I'd better read back in my garden diaries to find out just what I bought!

I agree with you about Desdemona, I find it captivating.
