I want to buy a new TV. I don't want it to be stupid but I don't want it to be too smart either. I've read 1984 and I know about telescreens.
When did life get so complicated?

I'm getting totally fed up with mine, I use the aerial most of the time on freeview, but after doing an update some time ago it now comes on on freeview for about 10 seconds, it then goes blank and starts loading some menu, I then have to switch it to freeview and after another 5 seconds I eventually get freeview back.
    It just a nightmare.

Do let us know how you get on. Our current TV is about 15 years old. It would be useful to get iplayer (or the equivalent) rather than peering at the tiny screen on my wife's tablet. Otherwise it's fine.

Well almost all new TVs are "smart " so thats nothing to bother about as you just use what features you want.

Key things we would suggest are the price you want to pay and the size of screen you want ?

You can get good reviews from places like Which if you are a member, but even then you want to go to some of the bigger retailers who have plenty of TVs on display and have a look and see which picture looks good to your eyes.

Why don't you look in the manufactures site / forum as likely others have the same problem and know how to fix it.

Also try replacing the remotes batteries as they could be low and causing a problem.

Try turning the set on by its inbuilt switches and see if the fault shows when started that way without the remote.

I dont think its got any switches on the TV, I cant find any, it happened after it did an update over a year ago.

Its an LG TV, and it has some of its own channels, if you get on them its a nightmare trying to get off them, I certainly wouldn't buy one of their TVs again.

Am sure your set will have its own controls, they are usually somewhere on the bottom edge, quiet small and unobtrusive like our LG tv.( about 8 years old now but still looking and working well , probably blow up tomorrow having said that !)

Never had any update trouble like yours, though ours is fed from a Humax recorder box.

A quick look on the web shows that its not generally possible to Roll Back the faulty(?) update but there are lists of possible work arounds; have you tried going into the menus and doing a Factory Reset ? but that will loose any settings, apps or passwords etc you have changed since new.

I am also having to replace my TV. for similar reasons to above. I only need a small 26-30ins screen as my snug is a tiny room. Not a lot of selection as far as I can see on line in a local shop. Everyone wants massive 6ft screens. I do not want an all bells and whistles model, I do not have a smart phone etc. I am going to phone the shop to confirm what they have available. They will come out and set it all up for me apparently. Local area only.

I bought a Cello C224F 22" screen, combined TV and dvd player a year ago. Only needed a small screen and only for playing old dvds, so I can't comment on it's overall functionality, but it's a great picture, sound etc, and it does the job. Added bonus, possibly - Made in Britain! Bought it via that big online retailer, who's name we try not to mention - Am..on :)

It's available in 16" to 43" screen sizes.

To be honest I dont want to fiddle with it, I usually spend about an hour just going round in circles, I have found an on off switch located at the bottom where the red light is that tells you its on standby, that you cant see anyway unless its pitch dark.
                Who designs these things FGS.:dunno:

I have an 18" Toshiba with a built in DVD player that sits alongside my
computer screen. I did have a few problems but when I changed the
                remote control the problems went.
Like you Pete I don't like to fiddle with things I don't really understand.
