Looking for suggestions re what is going to be a huge surplus of mange tout and I think they are dreadful if frozen.
I found a fairly old packet of mange tout seed and thought I might as well sow it and see what happens, probably not a lot. I soaked the seed ( meant to be for 24 hours), promptly forgot about it and came to with a rush a good 48+ hours later.
Thought the seed would no doubt have rotted off but sowed it anyway…..wrong. Virtually the whole lot germinated!
Scottish nature now kicks in and not liking waste I decided to just plant out the lot. Holy hell I now have a jungle of it and sure enough a mass of white flowers appearing equals a lot of pods.
I can give some away to friends and neighbours but still will be inundated. Sorry that should read mange tout, can’t seem to edit the title.

I stopped eating them after one fell open on my plate once and it contained the largest maggot I have ever seen.
      Nicely boiled.

I have frozen mange tout before and yes they aren't the same as fresh but still OK. I have also used them in chutneys with other surplus veg/fruit from the garden.

@hailbopp Lucky you.........mine have been a disaster this year..........usually do well. I mainly use them in salads - they go nicely with the spicy leaf stuff. Also in tomato sauce which I make a lot of and freeze. When you defrost and heat the sauce, you can add mangetout, beans, green peppers. Heating the sauce for a meal just "cooks" the greens sufficiently to stay crispish.
Alternatively, you could hire a carrier pigeon, load it up and send it down here

Lol, I love Mange Tout but there is a limit, I am still in slight shock that the seeds germinated having been soaking for at least 48 hours. Note to self to repeat this next year:)

You can pickle them like other crunchy veg.

I know pea pod wine is a thing, so I guess mange tout wine could also be a thing too....

I also dislike them when frozen, I've tried blanching etc and it doesn't do much, they still end up too soft when cooked.

Different I know but frozen runner beans were also something I detest along with frozen sprouts.
For some reason I dont think this kind of stuff freezes well, always has stale after taste.

sugar snap is definately superior but mangetout is still lovely. keep cold in a plastic bag in fridge and i find they can last a month after picking
