I don’t have a photo but can a rose be cut back now if it has long whippy branches shooting up from it? I’m not sure if it’s a climber or rambler it’s on a fence but is starting to “attack” as anyone walks past! Also it was cut back in February as it was huge (inherited with a new home) but hasn’t flowered so assuming, after reading wise owls post, that it may be a rambler? Or can it have a hard cut back now or should that be in Jan Feb time?

You can cut it back but that may result in less flowers this year.

However if its a plant in the wrong place or you just do not like it, then do not be afraid to remove it and plant something more suitable.

If it is a once flowering rambler then the best time to cut it back is after flowering, which could be now, but then it hasn't flowered! Peter Beales roses says you can prune hard and roses will always spring back. They do all their ramblers in winter as it's more convenient with their workload and they always flower. You can cut new rambler shoots back to about a third so long as you leave a bit of each new shoot to have flowers next year. Very old canes can be cut out and removed completely.

Thanks for the replies! Ok so chop off the dangerous attacking bits now & leave the big task of thinning it out to winter? It’s huge and I think it’ll be easier when the leaves are gone to see exactly what’s what! It’d be nice to get flowers next year though.
