Is it a some kind of National Sport to pronounce plant names in most illogical ways?

I'm absolutely hopeless with words containing more than three syllables, and tend to pronounce Latin names in Italian way, sugared with Nordic accent. That often results in a short pause and then a hesitant " so that's how it's pronounced... I never knew... :th scifD36: ".

Dandelion is the worst, honestly, there are no Dandy Lions! :paladin: And who decided to rename perfectly good Sedums as "Hylotelephium"? Why is it "Fistootchia" when a Festuca makes so much more sense?

Over the years we have decided with a friendly Tesco driver to disagree on Dahlias. He is a day-lya man and I'm a daah-lya woman. :heehee:

    Rant over!

I have stopped talking about them. There is only one way to pronounce it, and apparently it's not allowed.

I just pronounce most as they are spelt, if people dont like it and want airs and graces its their problem.

Its still a Clem Atis to me, never could stand the posh clem a tis.

Dandelion comes from the French, "dents de lion" or lion's teeth - from the shape of the leaves. The French also call it pissenlit - wet the bed. When I was a kid it was always said that if you picked dandelions you would wet the bed!

Miss Jif was allways stopping me and trying to get me to do things the right way, but things are too well ingrained now :phew:

@Jiffy I thought heuchera was pronounced, "hoosh er rah" until I heard it pronounced "heck er ah".

Over here we say "clem MAT is" but over there it is "clemah TIS" .

I used to grow "Pee Oh Knees" now I know they are supposed to be "Pe ah knees".

I don't care what people think of my mangled interpretations but am glad to be corrected because it makes me sound like a smarty pants gardener :heehee:

I thought heuchera was "Hoy Chair Ah". Then I heard people saying "Hoick Error".

Even on gardening progs Clematis and Heuchera are pronounced differently. I’m none the wiser. At least we know what the plants are - which is more than most people.

Cotoneaster? I say co-tone-e-aster. A friend of mine calls it cotton easter. Surely it would have two t's if it was cotton?
