My mum recently gave me this plant which has similar leaves to Thalictrum however it doesn’t flower like a Thalictrum. My mum said it’s over 50 years old and spreads a little. Gets to about 40cm high.

Does anyone know what it is?

Pics showing the flowers would be extremely helpful.

Thalictrum flowers can be quite varied.
    This is Thalictrum delavayii.

Sorry, Songbird, but ferns never have flowers.
Adiantum is the full name for the maidenhair fern.

Apparently this doesn't flower according the OP.

But I agree maidenhair fern doesn't have white flowers.

Do you mean it hasn't flowered for you @machtucker or has it never flowered?
The white Thalictrums can be a bit temperamental, and it won't be happy if it's potted long term - more likely to flower in the ground, but it can take a few years.

Oh dear, I read that as .....the plant flowered, but flowers didn't look like a Thalictrum flowers!
        machtucker,....Think we need clarification here.
If plant has been kept in a pot for 50 years it will be struggling./it will not have grown very much.

I have Hewetts double but it is reluctant to flower.
It has had flowers in the past but not every year.

Yes - a wee bit more concise info will help!
Anything sitting in a pot for 50 years would struggle to do anything, but maybe it's a division of a 50 year old plant?

I suppose it might even be the very tall, beautiful Thalictrum aquilegiifolium...that has in effect been bonsai'd in a pot far too small for it. THALICTRUM AQUILEGIIFOLIUM 02-06-2018 12-15-46.JPG

It certainly looks like a thalictrum to me! If you can find a place to plant it in the ground, that will give it a chance to grow to its proper size and maybe flower next year.

Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay I’ve been away. So…. I have spoken to my mum again and apparently is does have small bud type flowers. I will try and get a better picture of the one growing at her house. Hers is planted in the ground.

I’ve been puzzling over why I thought this plant was a maidenhair fern with white flowers. I do know ferns don’t flower so why was I getting muddled up I wondered?
I’ve finally remembered that where our plant was in our old house, it was mingled in with some Woodruff and that is where the white flowers come in!
Glad I sorted that that out as I’ve been puzzling over it a lot.

machtucker Please can you go in and delete several duplicate posts.

Interesting. Thalictrum Dioicum...I love all Thalictrum but confess I have never heard of this one.
On RHS site there is only one nursery growing it..the one that has the national collection of Thalictrum...so it must be rather rare.
                  Look after it!

Please when either your one or your mums one flowers do please add clear pics to this thread.
