Buxton is where my mortal remains are just now. Yorkshire is where my soul came into being and stays. :)

We also took in a number of Syrians some of whom have returned others still feel too unsafe to return.

I notice that there are no suggestions about what to do with illegal migrants. Just people saying they shouldn't be here.

What makes you think they would want to come here.

Well if I was unemployed somewhere in the EU with no money and read about all the freebies given to illegals I would come to the UK ASAP.

@waterbut they can get better unemployment help in the EU than in the UK and not have to worry about being foreign as there is free movement for education, employment, hols etc. Those with no skills may do well for a while in fruit and veg picking jobs or as cleaners and hotel or motorway services jobs that British natives consider beneath their dignity but they like to go home again too.

The ones you need to worry about are the victims of traffickers, working for a pittance, often enforced by "debt" into prostitution, cannabis growing, illegal trading in vapes and contraband cigarettes, alcohol etc. There the problem is the organised crime behind the trade.

Why do you assume that young EU nationals would have no state support and no access to healthcare, education and job opportunities.
From what I know they have these things available to them just like they are available to young UK nationals within the UK.
I think the requirement to be young would rule most people on GC out.

I'd build internment camp for illegals, they would be secure, and they would get the minimum required until they either get citizenship or get sent back to whatever country they came from.
The ones that throw away their documents would never under any circumstances stand a chance of citizenship.
It might take a few years for the penny to drop, but eventually it would filter back that we are not the soft touch anymore, and coming here is a lottery of whether you get to stay or not.

Of course this would be dragged through the courts and never be allowed to happen in such a fair and civilised country like the UK.
Which brings us straight back to where we started.

The Law is the problem and until we change laws there is absolutely nothing we can do about the situation.

There needs to be a deterrent of some kind.

We often here the words, safe and legal routes, spouted about, as if that would stop the problem, but what would happen with the ones that cant get here via those safe and legal routes?
They would get on a boat in Calais, surely.

Safe and legal routes is just another term for an open door policy.

About 20 years ago my ex in-laws retired and moved to Spain but before they could buy a house they had to prove they had enough money to live on including medical bills as they couldn't speak Spanish they had to pay for interpreters at doctors and wherever needed.
We now have thousands arriving on our shores who are given accommodation, money, food, interpreters and anything else they need this has got to be wrong

We could become more unfair and less civilised, in fact rather like the US.
By safe and legal I was thinking more of being able to complete the paperwork and get approval, visas etc outside the UK and then arrive via one of the standard means of passage.
Internment camps are pretty expensive to run even on minimum rations.

But there you go, safe and legal routes, so you let everyone in who applies?
If you dont they then go to calais.

I'm all for being not unfair, but a bit more discerning, on who gets in and who doesn't.

The government are supposedly clearing the backlog, by letting them stay mostly, but in doing that they have increased the rate they are coming in.

Internment camps may be costly, but so are hotels.

Just to add the last time they tried housing these people in what was army accommodation they tried to burn it down.
I think that speaks volumes about the kind of people that are amongst them.
