Many years ago, I planted a young Frisia Aurea sapling in my garden where I thought it would fit in. It has grown steadily and is now 30ft tall with a trunk that takes 2 people to put their arms around. It has had to have its lower branches removed to allow removal vehicles access to the house and the base of the trunk is protruding into the edge of the drive.
It is a stunning tree but I fear the new owners of the house will probably cut it down. I hope not. When I planted it I had no idea Frisias produced viscious spines, the tree is in its full glory at the moment with delicious limey green feathery foliage that wafts in the slightest breeze.
Has anyone guessed I rather like "my" tree!

I have a gleditsia sunburst, which I think is a similar tree and I must admit I love that but it's nowhere near the scale of your tree. Unfortunately the older I get the more I've come to accept that when I move/pass on, my garden will likely be levelled, so I just do what I want and don't worry.
Our neighbours house was sold and the guy said it was because he loved the garden, it was a mature cottage garden with a row of apple and plum trees, but he'd stripped it all out with months just put gravel down. The same thing happened with my grandmothers garden and most of the sold houses around me.

There was a similar thread some time ago regarding the planting of sapling trees that one day could be twice the size of your house!

I posted a picture of a huge monkey puzzle tree which I see every day on the way to work. It's literally 5ft from the house!! It looks ridiculous.

I keep looking at my monkey puzzle tree in our front lawn. I planted it as a 2ft sapling and it's now about 10ft. It's in a reasonable position but I often wonder just how big it will be long long after I've left this world and whether sadly, one day, someone may have to cut it down.

i have a fair few trees that I keep within bounds, if left to their own devices they would get really big.
I'm sure the whole garden will get trashed when I'm gone, people around here prefer extensions to gardens, so they just want a patio and make the house as big as possible, even to the point of getting rid of side access.

I'm sure Mohammed will get it how he wants it.;)

Oh how true you all are. I spent many happy hours with my last garden, created from nothing, a terrace, lawn, flower, sitting area and a veg garden. When it was sold the couple told me it was the garden that sold it to them. After a couple of years I went back to visit my old neighbour and we looked over the fence into "my garden". Most of it was under grass, some lollipop roses, with a huge cement monstrosity of a pond full of koi carp. At least they had kept the 2 old apple trees.
