I normally pick my broad beans regularly, but, after feeling unwell for a few weeks, I have not been able to. I harvested the ripest today and I can't tell if they are still good to eat. The pods are very soft and flimsy, but the beans inside are still firm and green. They do, however, have a little black line across the top, which I am unfamiliar with.
Will this batch be OK to eat still?

I usually eat mine at that stage.
Maybe you normally pick when younger, but just cook a bit longer perhaps.

They are fine to eat, but they won't be as soft and tender as your earlier beans. The older they get the longer they take to cook and they get either floury or a bit hard, more like butter beans.

      The black line is normal.

The only you can tell if you like them is to try them.

The black line is where the bean was attached to the pod. In younger beans it's less noticeable because it's the same colour as the bean.

I actually prefer slightly older beans and peas, as long as you cook them reasonably well I kind of like the firmer texture, obviously starchy rather than sweet like the younger ones are.

Thanks all... I'll add them into my meal tonight. I absolutely love broad beans, so I'm glad they won't be wasted
