E on are pushing the smart metters again here, saying it will reduce carbon emissions  why scrap a good working metter for a new one that alone has added more carbon
They now send out email reminders on the 3rd then we get a bill 2 days later which is estimated  another push to get you on a smart meter:sad:

I can remember years ago, we used to listen to medium wave radio, it was always very crowded and getting a good signal was very hit and miss.
Long wave was always crystal clear for those days, never understood why everything was crammed on medium wave.

Cost of transmission is more on Long Wave than medium wave and broadcast licences are fewer because it is national, whereas Medium Wave more localised in terms or transmitter reach, a bit cheaper to operate and you also had crossover between areas. Plus, Medium Wave was actually capable of stereo, although it was seldom used in the UK. FM/VHF similarly localised but increased performance with the change in modulation. The crossover effects were more noticed by folks when they lived in an area that was on the boundaries of areas too - where we lived, if you had a wideband aerial, you could get one of three transmitters - Caldbeck, Thornhill or Blackhill; Blackhill only ever came in as a squeak at some points of town and with a high aerial mast and masthead amplifier as it was a hell of a long distance away. The problem arose under certain conditions where a high gain amplified wideband aerial was necessary for the Thornhill signals as there was two that were fairly close (from memory it was Border TV on C28 and STV on C29), and sometimes only occurred under the right atmospheric conditions too - so depending on the weather, folks could suffer interference on Border TV as the two overlapped each other.

The con with smart meters is that you are contacted to say your smart meter needs renewing. If you agree you could find yourself with a new provider. Check with your present provider by phone to see if they are replacing old ones in your area in the first instance. I have had this experience.

Don't get me started! ;) They are a con! Dynamic pricing, which already exists in some forms, will be a nightmare for people on a budget or who can't change their routines to fit round the constantly moving goal posts.

Smart meters are great news for the energy companies, not for consumers in the long term. And it will be long term. There will be no going back.

Mine does as well, do you buy big bottles, as I find it goes off fast once opened, whereas unopened ones with the same date are still OK.

I buy Arla's BOB milk in large containers. The milk stays fresh for ages after opening. That's one of their selling points. Also the skimmed is quite drinkable and not watery.

I buy small, 1 pint containers, as we don’t have milk in drinks and don’t get through a lot. Once opened, I try to use it in two days, and sniff test before using it on the third day, even if well within the use by date. Conversely, I will use an unopened pint on the day after expiry, and it always smells and tastes fine. It seems that having been opened is what triggers the going off process?

I expect it's because once you've opened the bottle and used some, there's space for more air. Whether the bacteria that make it go "off" are in the air, or already in the milk but need the air to grow, I don't know. I wonder why they don't sell milk in something like wine boxes where the plastic bag collapses as you use it instead of letting air in.
We buy milk in 4 pint bottles and find that when it's down to less than an inch in the bottom, it will go off in the fridge overnight no matter what the use by date is.

I find pea milk (split peas) lovely on cereal and in coffee too. I use unsweetened soya in tea - have done for almost 40 years now - and it has got better and better over the years. Wasn't very pleasant at first though! Every time I go out where tea might be in order I take a supply with me.

I began using "long life" semi skimmed milk when I spent time in both the UK and France. That way I could always rely on keeping some milk in each place. I did still buy "real" milk until the regular milk person went out of business. Once the carton ( 1 lt ) is opened, I keep in the fridge and never had any problems.

I was buying cravendale, similar to BoB I think.
                              It does last longer.
