    Hi all,

Beginning of the season my rosemary was looking great but then it started going a bit yellow and now the base has gone brown with greenery higher up.

Any suggestions of what I can do or is the lower area dead?

    Many thanks

It's not looking good and I think it likely that it is dead.
If you replace it now there's time for a new one to put on some growth before winter.

I use lots of it and have several around the garden and in pots. The garden ones grow better than those in pots.

Might yours have been overwatered or severely underwatered? they're quite tough plants and find they go on for about 5 years before dying for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the prompt reply. It was a bit yellow a few months ago and east not sure if it was a case of over or under watering and wasn't sure how to tell.

Just gone out to take some fresh pictures

    Time for a new one.
The best compost mix would be something like 50% John Innes No2 or No3 and 50% horticultural grit - they like it really free draining, then you can water it more frequently with no problem.
Use a few stones to cover the drainage hole(s) then 1" layer of the grit then the mix.
I feed mine once on Spring and once in Summer with an ordinary liquid feed - that's all they need.
Cuttings are a very easy way to get more plants

Ok thanks. I'm thinking maybe it was over watered although I don't feel I've watered it that much, but I have noticed my new Daphne in the front garden, which had a couple yellow leaves when I watered it, is healthy and green now since I stopped watering it despite being in full sun all day.

Maybe the rosemary preferred the same with little water. Pretty sure I did use a mix of John innes number 2 and the pot has drainage

Ours survived for decades and then last year died. So we bought a new plant and put it in a different area and it has been fantastic in such a short time. Like us plants don't last but we can replace.

I lost ours this spring and I know it was underwatering. With underwatering the bottom leaves go yellow and you tend to lose them first as the plant sheds them to retain moisture at the growing tips. Over watering usually affects the whole plant, turning it yellow.
It can be tricky to keep things in pots properly watered, especially in spring when it doesn't seem warm but the wind might have dried the soil out. The problem is rosemary can be hard to tell if it's dry and sometimes it's already to late.

ok so maybe because I've lost the lower leaves, it is underwatering, but then not sure if it will come back.

Certainly weird year this year, we have a couple of roses that are full of leave, but producing hardly any buds
