    Hi there

I'm posting as I've just noticed that my old Lilac tree is sporting a fair few brown leaves, some of which have already fallen off. There appears to be fine dark spots on leaves on other parts of the plant. I'm wondering whether this is Lilac blight and if I should drastically pare back the tree by cutting off the parts which are particularly affected. Any advice most gratefully received.

It could be a disease but I think it's more likely to be the effects of the dry hot weather. I would leave it alone and see what happens next spring. Maybe prune off any bits that are definitely dead not just losing leaves to conserve water/reduce transpiration.

From the RHS on lilac blight:
"Lilac blight is difficult to control as the bacteria are readily dispersed by wind and rain. Because the disease is favoured by cool, wet conditions it can be naturally restricted during periods of hot, dry weather. Avoid overhead watering of young plants to help prevent spread of the bacteria."

I'd also say it's the hot weather, I'm having the same

My lilac is suffering too, despite being watered. I'm in Dordogne and it's been in the late 30°s.

As long as the leaves fall off its probably OK.
You don't want them staying attached.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

Hopefully it is what some of you say and that the warm weather is at play. It isn't as hot up here in Scotland but there have been some warm days. Fingers crossed it is that.
