My lawn is a hideous mess right now. I would like to re seed it. I do not need a show lawn nor do I need to allow people playing sport on it. I have a shady area that attracts moss but most of it is in the sun.
Please can any of you nice people recommend a good lawn seed supplier. I am going to need quite a lot as my front lawn needs attention also. many thanks.

consider adding white clover, yarrow and selfheal seeds into it, especially yarrow if it is intense sun. sow at the same time in autumn after giving it a firm rake.

      History note
Johnsons were based in Boston when I was growing up and opened the town's first garden centre in the 80s.
They hit financial problems in the 90s and were bought up and moved out.
At one time they supplied Wimbledon, many football clubs and Cricket grounds.

Could my Johnsons seeded lawn be hiding its true potential as a sports turf then @NigelJ? At the moment it looks like a lunar landscape .

Now that I don't know. However my mother was nursery maid for the family and always spoke kindly of them as a family.

You won't go wrong with Johnsons. Choose the right variety for your situation and just follow instructions, keep moist at all times and hold off pigeons. Get hold of a pre-seeding fertilizer from Agrigem (paradoxically, despite its name, that needs to be applied after germination).

FYI, I am copying and pasting what I wrote elsewhere today on How much will you miss outdoor gardening in the next few months?):

"For what it’s worth, for the first time last autumn I took the plunge and, despite adverse advice, started using Johnsons’ Luxury Lawn seeds and have been impressed by both its germination rate and recovery from drought. The only downside is that the boxes available at the moment were packaged in July 2024. When I mentioned this in the shop, they gave me two for one, so I bought two and received four. The word is that seed deteriorates at the rate of 30%/year, but with these I have not experienced this; a lot depends on how you proceed and how moist and protected you keep the seeds."

I'm still using Johnson's seed that's three years old and still germinates well.

That's really encouraging to hear. Which type do you use?

                It's surprised me too @LawnAndOrder.

Now there's a question. I'll have to investigate tomorrow and let you know. When I open a box I empty the seed into a lidded (is that a word) plastic container. That may make a difference to it staying dry and fresh. However, I still have two unopened boxes and I'll give feed back on those - if they ever get opened.

Look in your garden centre and read the instruction. All the boxes of grass seed tell you what they areas they are suitable for. Plenty to choose from or just check your search engine out with a description.

Many thanks to everyone who replied. Looks like Johnsons is the way to go. :) Now I need to find some special offers!!
I also need to know how to go about 'over seeding' so I will start a new thread.

Here it is @LawnAndOrder. I checked the packaging date on the box and that stated May 2021, so it's older than I thought.
