      There's a cherry tree next door, so maybe.

        @Pete8 . Well, it's definitely a tree!. I can't get it out. I've gone down pretty far and no sign of any kind of root ball. It must have a deep tap root. I can't go any further without damaging the surrounding plants.
        It's not a bad place for a tree so I'm going to leave it for now.

          If the next door tree is reasonably close it could be suckers.
