The RHS website recommends you either sow in autumn at about 10C/50F or keep the seeds cool and dry and sow next spring.

It's been a good many years since I sowed any grass seed and that was in spring and they were a mixed bad, both in varieties and success. Since then, far more varieties are available offering different shapes, form, colours and season of interest and I've kind of gone off them - becoming fashionable has made them open to being mis-used and boring.

I did get very excited again by the plantings of hakonechloa at Knoll garden when I visited in June but it doesn't come true from seed and doesn't do drought that well either so I've ordered seeds of blue fescue to arrive in September and will sow half in September/October and half in spring.

I used to grow quite a few Grasses but all I have at present is the Black Grass ( Ophiopogon ) . I know many gardeners consider the Pampas grass very "70's" but I found it useful next to the large pond in my previous garden and the birds loved the dried plumes to line their nests with.
Good luck with the blue fescue @Obelix-Vendée - another favourite of mine.

there is a pretty grass ive seen near here called something like dwarf bearded grass. its only 30cm tall but has lovely fluffy inflorescences, like a sheeps tail. its where national grids trucks drive so it might be invasive but I remember being told it was a eurasian grass and i havent seen it anywhere else.

ive also seen some very strange grass like plants, perhaps not true grasses, along field edges, or inside rape fields. wheat and barley are more monoculture whereas rape is thin enough to have wierd weeds inside it. worth keeping an eye out

That looks a bit like lagurus ovatus but more elongated. I like it! I'm surprised you say other things grow in rape fields. I used to ride my horse along a path down the middle of them, and could only see yellow - I always wished there'd be a bit of variation in colour - maybe lemon or an occasional orange one?

That looks like Briza, @Adam I - commonly called quaking grass. Hard to see clearly from the photo though.
