If banks suddenly decide they need to verify your ID after dealing with them for decades, presumably they could be guilty of taking in money from an "unknown" person during that time ? What exactly is Digital ID and what equipment is necessary for it's use ? If a person needs a certain device but doesn't have it, is the govt proposing to hand it out for free ? Could prove rather expensive.
The Culturee Secretary seems unable to make up her mind as to exactly what the govt. plans are. One minute every UK citizen requires a digital ID, the next minute only those seeking emplyment need it and then later states that everyone requires it but doesn't always need to carry/show it. No wonder people become confused.
I like the Hermit idea @Songbird but do you not then have to live on top of an isolated hill/mountain ? Not many of those left - particularly in the tourist season - and there will always be some mountaineer who is determined to get to the top of the one you have managed to find
As for labels - who actually decides what "normal" is ? One person's definition of normality may well differ from another.

I'm not buying a smart fridge:biggrin: maybe the smart bin could detect what you throw away, or better still the smart toilet.:steamy:

When asked to see my ID by the bus driver I'd just say my battery is flat.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Another ill thought through plan by our Government over the decades. That is one thing Labour don't have a monopoly on.

I don't understand the objection to the principle of ID cards. Done properly (that's the big problem) they could greatly reduce the ability of those with no entitlement to use systems in this country. For example, the NHS should be charging non UK residents for use of their services. Many hospitals refused to check because it was time consuming and difficult. A basic ID card would be a simple check.
I am against digital ID for a number of reasons. Any digital system can be hacked, and the history of poor system implementation for public sector systems is well documented. Add to that there are many people who either can manage digital systems or don't have/want smart phones.
Just one example from my personal experience of public sector systems. I worked for DWP when ESA was being introduced. We all had to sit through 6 weeks of computer based training, and there were notes on the whiteboards of the errors in the training package. We had to use those errors as the answer to questions or would fail. The then Pensions Secretary visited our site and had a Q&A session where he was singing the praises of the training package which he said he had been to told had been fully tested. In my previous life I had worked in IT support for over 30 years. When I said that and told him it was without doubt the worst training package I had ever seen he was genuinely shocked. He was given a copy of the errors we had to use to take with him. In fairness to him, he did e-mail to say that the information he had received, not just from me, had been 'enlightening'.

If the digital id is linked to a GP computer then it may be worth having as then my doc wouldn't have been reading someone else's notes which nearly lost me my HGV licence and had lots of problems sorting it out with dvla

The fact is whether is actually digital at our end, the info will be digital at their end.

So to me the term digital is just jargon, if they gave me a slip of paper and said that's your ID card all the info will still be hackerable from the computers at their end.

I dont think it will happen, it will cost too much, and they wont have time to sort it out before they get voted out.
Just pie in the sky Starmer floating an idea to see where it lands.
In the bin, would be my guess.

What about the people that eat an excessive amount of brussels that are in danger of polluting the air and possibly causing pain and sickness?

@shiney They have started feeding asparagopsis seaweed to cows as it blocks the production of methane. I'm sure it wouldn't make Brussels sprouts taste any worse to humans.

What would be considered an "excessive" amount of Brussels sprouts I wonder ? I'm discounting those idiots who compete to see how much food of any description they can stuff down themselves in 3 minutes. Is there anyone alive today who can honestly say they have never once fa**ed in their entire life

@Philippa One is an excessive amount for me. I really do have the gene that says they taste and smell horrid and so does Possum. OH, however, likes them but has to buy and prep his own. I won't even grow them anymore.

I'm with Pete on id cards. I think people are giving them to much thought for something that I can't see getting through. There will be a backlash when they work out how much it would all cost, compared to how much the illegals remove from the economy, and I genuinely think it was just touted as a distraction from what was going on and an excuse they can claim they were wanting to solve the problem, when it doesn't get though.
