On YouTube the comments are often as entertaining as the content. I watched a short crochet video yesterday and was puzzled by what the finished product was supposed to be; I checked the comments and I was not the only one. Lots of people saying "Well that's a very nice ... something".

So if you watch IPlayer only on Youtube, do you have to pay a licence fee? (I bet the answer is yes!) I'm going to ask Perplexity AI this one too.

This is the answer I got: "If watching BBC iPlayer, a TV licence is required regardless of device or platform. However, if you watch only YouTube videos that are on demand (non-live), you do not need a TV licence. You do need a licence if you watch live TV broadcasts on YouTube, such as live news or sports. So, if you watch only on-demand content on YouTube, no licence is needed, but for any live streaming on YouTube, a licence is required"

How do you get to see the comments on your TV, I can scroll down on my laptop and see them but cant work out how you see them on a TV screen.

No I haven't worked that out either, I'm not sure it would be useful as you're sitting too far away to read them comfortably. I think you're supposed to be able to sync up your phone so that you can read comments on the phone whilst watching a video on the TV. I haven't bothered trying though.

I usually watch a plumber on YT adjusting the pressure on the exact model of my boiler- the problem vs. reading the manual is that the manual is generic for all models.

The challenge is that the nozzles must be turned in the exactly right sequence (or risk an explosion or worse, a cold house) which is very easy to follow on a video rather than reading from a manual.

And when it comes to mates and neighbours... Aron is not getting anywhere near my boiler! :yikes:

Also, some tasks are just quite simple so not worth bothering calling around people. For example, removing the low plastic cover panel of washing mashine to get to the lint sieve- do I just pull with a force, or is there some clever twist-and-click mechanism? 2 mins to find out in YT and avoid breaking anything. :)

For bigger tasks such as laying a gravel path, books and longer reads online are my go-to methods. YT is for quick visual aids for things that are hard to explain in words. (Oh, and for 80's Hanoi Rocks videos  )

I watch a lot of music videos on YouTube and save quite a few to favourites. I search around to find those with the least adverts as it's damned annoying to have ad breaks throughout something like a long guitar solo. The ads are getting worse too. I watched one yesterday, half an hour long, with ad breaks every few minutes which ruined the piece of music.

I found the ads very variable; sometimes I could go for several days with nothing annoying, then suddenly I'd be getting 4 ad breaks in a 15 minute video. It was particularly annoying because I use a lot of workout videos; having an ad cut in in the middle of an exercise is maddening. They're usually adverts for chocolate too - I think it's deliberate.

I used YT three times last year: one told me how to change the battery on our heating thermostat thing, the second how to prune Perovskia, and finally an episode from Time Team when they stayed in a local village nearby.
OH used to watch YT a lot but stopped now with all the ads this year (I was told).

I didn't know thermostats had batteries. I just turn the dial. :noidea:

I also don't understand this thing about pressure on the boiler. What pressure, where? I very rarely have a problem with the boiler and just phone the local business that installed it and service it (annual service £80) and if I have a problem, just two in the last two years, I phone them and they quickly tell me how to fix it whilst I'm talking to them - no charge.

Two years ago in the big freeze that we had (two weeks with -10C to -12C) the boiler stopped. They asked me to tell them what the fault number was on the display, told me to just pull off a small concertina plastic pipe, pour some hot water down it and wait two minutes. Then put the pipe back on and phone them. They then told me which button to press and it all worked OK again. Magic :hapydancsmil:

Other minor faults (not had any major ones :fingers crossed:) the boss just pops in between jobs. The advantage of using a good, small local business. Maybe living in a village helps.

I'm another one. It went years with no issues, then suddenly went blank. Realised it was batteries and replaced them, but it still kept failing every few weeks. Came to the conclusion it must not like the rechargeables I was putting in so bought a new set of brand name AAAs. Hasn't died since (touch wood).
