I am often puzzled by modern life.

I doubt if a foreign accent/language would be acceptable.
I note no mention is made of horse riding, fox hunting or shooting all of which are essential to a Gentleman. Neither is wine tasting mentioned.

 

Presumably this Eton Mess of a child has parents so wealthy he'll never need to sully his hands or mind with working for a living, so going to Eton really seems rather a waste of money.
There again, they could give the brass straight to Eton, and cut out the middle man. The boy would no doubt get in if he was a chimp in a striped teeshirt, providing enough money was waved in the right direction.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if father was deposed, arrested, assassinated or divorced before the poor lad is old enough for Eton.

Has anybody else noticed recently the number older men who seem to have adopted shorts as their preferred item of leg covering?

Over the last couple of months I have seen tourist visitors to the local town, not hikers calling in for a coffee, who could be expected to wear shorts, and not residents, who cover their shanks in proper trousers, wandering around wearing these things. I know that postmen appear to have decided that shorts are their year-round uniform, but these old codgers are a new phenomenon. You can see couples walking along the pavement, the woman will be dressed appropriately from head to toe for the usually inclement weather while her male companion will have sensible clothing on his top half but a pair of baggy cotton shorts on his lower regions.

Is it just in the Peak District or have old men lost their minds elsewhere too?

How many are doing this to show off their tattoos? I see it each time I visit the supermarkets. I'm 78 and who wants to see my spindly legs other than to laugh at.

We're still in the mid teens here so plenty of shorts to be seen but not as many as in summer. Some legs, like some bottoms, should be well covered at all times.
