I'd just kick him out with all his wives, he can have as many wives and offspring, where ever he comes from, so stay there.

Indeed we do. It is necessary to adopt to the ways of your new home country. It's also enrichening to hold on to your heritage and culture, that's benefiting everybody - hey, life before curry or pizza? :)

I enjoy learning about new cultures within the society I'm in. Take Burn's supper, never knew about it.

I'll be baking my Finnish gingerbread again for Christmas :)

As you can imagine, a Brit in France gets lots of scepticism about her cooking, but I have wowed them with British, German and Polish cakes and savouries too. Same with the Belgians - even more fussy and gourmet but don't tell the French. I always get asked for the recipes.

Re heat pumps and their siting on the property:- there have been problems with noise affecting neighbours and someone we met on holiday said that their local council has banned the use of them in one neighbourhood as the properties are too close together and they would cause a noise nuisance.

We have solar panels (works very well) and airconditioning. The airconditioning condensers are similar to the heat pump unit and we had it set a few inches from our wall as both the sound and vibration would have been impossible for me. I have highly sensitive hearing and would not have been able to stand it. Fortunately the noise doesn't bother the neighbour as we are over 50ft from his house - and he is deaf!

My neighbour had one installed recently and got one widely used in Denmark and Germany one reason being it was a lot quieter than those often installed in the UK, also cost him a fair bit more.

@Obelix-Vendée One of our local councils wanted to give permission for thousands of new houses near to a motorway junction which can't cope with the current traffic levels. An independent expert review of the proposal was done and the application was rejected. Local councillors up in arms claiming they know the capacity of roads etc better than the experts. Just about everybody living anywhere near the motorway knows it's chaos at peak hours, but the council really don't care. They are just hell bent on meeting 'targets'.

A locally campaigned against, mc Donalds opened recently and was given permission for 24 hours a day despite objections. They claimed it wouldn't contribute rubbish to the area, especially the woodland behind it but that has proven to be a load of tosh, as the woods are already covered in wrappers with the golden m, but it's progress apparently.

We also had a local housing project where the developer agreed to bid 15 affordable homes as part of their permission but they are now claiming it's costs have risen due to ground water problems and that now they want to include only 30 affordable homes in the project. The local planning said it was fine but the council are fighting them saying they should have done due diligence when surveying the site.

@Selleri Fortunately Gingerbread isn't illegal here - just as well as yours sounds absolutely scrumptious :star: x 5

Retaining many cultural aspects from your native country/heritage is to be respected by others and should be welcomed by us all. How else do we learn about other nations ? However, people are still regulated by the laws of the country in which they choose to reside. We may disagree with some of our own laws but are still expected to abide by them. One example which springs to mind is the Abortion laws in some US states which mean some women have to travel to another state to be able to have a legal abortion. If ever there was a case for a Human Rights claim that is certainly one in my view. Not just America - many countries are guilty of enacting strange laws but until they are overturned, we can assume prosecution if we fail to comply.

It's been that way in Ireland for deacades @Philippa, both north and south. Eire only legalised it in 2018 and NI only decriminalised it in 2020 but it is limited to the first 12 weeks of a prgnancy.

Yes @Obelix-Vendée - totally crazy but then I think the whole North and South thing over there is pretty ridiculous. My OH has worked all over the world and spent time in N Ireland in the late 1970's. He hated it there and it was the only country he refused to go back to despite lucrative job offers.

I worked in South Africa in the early 60's and, of course, disagreed with apartheid but had to obey it. I still, almost, got into trouble by accident. I was walking in Cape Town one evening and realised I had lost my way. There was only one person in sight of whom I could ask the way. It was a black woman and whilst I was asking her a police car came by and were going to arrest both of us! Fortunately I talked my/our way out of it. :phew:

Panama City was classed as dangerous to foreigners when OH was there. Never venture into the city. Zambian customs officials took all his cash from him on entering the country tho luckily did not steal all the clothing we had bought to give his Zambian colleagues. China always insisted on providing "security personnnel" in attendance and Iran did much the same. US airport officials accused him of trying to enter the country illegally when his flight from Argentina was diverted to New York. He had no visa as he wasn't expecting to be there . I was also accused of trying to enter the US for nefarious means when I applied for a visa to visit friends in Hawaii - they were querying the application because I was married but travelling on my own and assumed I wished to live there !!
