Never thought of planting shallots at this time of year, dont they just produce seed heads.

While clearing the peabean supports we found some still on the plants.

We have already got enough seeds for next years sowing so these are now soaking ready to be cooked.

You can plant shallots in the autumn or spring for a good crop.

After seeing this thread, and the shallot chat, I remembered there was a couple in the fridge from something my daughter made a while ago. One was soft, but the other was nice and firm, so I potted it up yesterday and popped it in the little plastic gr'house, just as an experiment.
Not grown them before as we wouldn't normally use them much. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Any autumn sown/planted aliums tend to rot with me, it's too wet here I think for them. For shallots I sow zebrunne in late February, if they get eaten by slugs then there's still plenty of time to buy sets to plant out

They aren't true shallots but they are different enough from normal onions to grow and the last ages when properly cured. Plus they can get pretty big if you give them space

That's an impressive shallot, does that variety grow as single bulbs or divide like most shallots?

It's banana shallot called Zebrunne and grows like an onion, not like a shallot. I think it's an onion/shallot cross although I'm not sure if that

I've had a really good crop of zebrune this year, definitely growing them again next year, I started mine in the greenhouse as multiple sown seed in cell trays in mid February.

Got some large beetroot, some daikon radish and some leeks. Planted field beans in a bed for green manure mainly. Although if they survive and I get a crop it'll be a bonus. Autumn mustards are producing well too.

I planted some pretty dry garlic corms only about a week ago and they are showing already, the ground must still be warm.

Not veg but planted replacement Raspberry canes outside. Mizuna and mustard salads in Allotment greenhouse after removing the tomatoes. It's so rediculosly mild that thete is chickweed growing everywhere at the plots. Everyone seems to have it.:noidea:
