The caterpillars tell me it's going to be a mild winter in this area.

@Philippa it's like news presenters telling us what the govt will do/say in the next announcement/law/budget. Not news till it's happened or happening. Whereas weather forecasts @pete are supposed to be about what is about to happen and will come in the next few days. I suspect the women whisper so they don't scream about how much their feet hurt in those ludicrously high-heeled shoes so many wear these days both for news and weather.

Caterpillars tell me there are holes in the insect netting on the brassicas and that it's been mild enough for them to hatch and eat my cabbages, not that it's going to continue mild enough for them to survive the coming winter.

But in some place's they can be right, they forecasted lots of rain here, and they were right all road flooded and we couldn't get in or out, but saying that we had a weather warning for windy a few month back and it was just like normal windy

Better to have too many warnings than too few.

I'm not sure. Too many warnings and people just stop listening. Better to keep these for when they are needed, IMV.

They got a super computer so it can be accurate, but if it hasn't been updated by micsoft then it a bit of a wasted time :heehee:

Which caterpillars do you come across most in your area @redstar ? Are there certain ones you try to protect and certain ones you consider a nuisance ? I'm taking it that you will see some that we never do ? Not exactly a "Whaaatt" subject I know but be interesting to know nevertheless.
They are all fascinating in their way particularly when you can follow them as they develop. At a guess I'd say @Obelix-Vendée is referring to the Cabbage White - prolific this year for us and often considered a nuisance.

Caterpillars have been nibbling my pelargoniums this yr, which is a first.

But the models aren't 100% accurate and weather systems often don't develop as predicted. They clearly think the warnings are needed when they issue them.

Exactly this. I know I am guilty of exactly that because 99.5% of the warnings we get for here turn out to be the grand total of nothing.
