Your post made me wonder why I hadn't received mine yet as it was promised two months ago - but, of course, it wasn't winter then.

So I looked at my current account and it wasn't there. I then decided to look in my savings account and it went in there  two weeks ago. I shall now give it to the disabled person I look after as they have taken away his Warm Home Discount with no understandable reason for it. When I asked why the answer was "it's where he lives and the size of the flat" :rolleyespink:. So I phoned them to explain and they said they haven't the faintest idea.

As I don't need the Winter Fuel Payment and never asked for it in the first place I shall take it round to him tomorrow.

I’m not 100% sure, but I vaguely remember that the winter fuel payment can be recouped by tax if the recipient’s income is over a certain threshold. So although it has appeared in your account, that doesn’t mean you keep it, but it may disappear down a different tunnel so that you might not realise that it’s gone… (sorry about the garbled English!)

@Golarne, yes, I think the plan is for HMRC to siphon it back from higher rate tax-payers.

I will be using my winter fuel payment to help pay for the fuel I use this winter. I am not wealthy, like some of you lot obviously are.

They won't be taking it back from us as we don't have income apart from our pensions - the taxman agreed, twenty five years ago, that we needn't do a tax return in future.

The important ones were written a couple of weeks ago, one needs a letter and a stamp, another has a stamp others awaiting visits. Just cards for the neighbours to do.

I haven't bothered with cards since we moved here in 2001 as they don't have card shops ... well, they might in big cities which I don't frequent.

Bah humbug! I send cards with no expectations of getting one back. I enjoy doing it. I only send them to nice people and not out of a feeling of obligation.

Edit: and they are great means for sending seeds !

@pete where we worked we decided that giving cards to those we saw every day was...so we bought one big card and those who wanted to signed it and donated some money. Each year a member of the team would nominate a charity (local so that we could go to them) for the money collected. We raised loads of money for different charities over the years and all were happy with the outcome. Since retirement this became another issue. If others send you a card you sort of feel that you should do so as well and so our card expense increased a lot.
We have some friends that many years ago stopped sending cards and rang their friends for a chat. Wonderful. We have been doing that as well and it is so good to continue talking to friends instead of sending a card.
