A different moan and maybe something that others have noticed too... Swede!

Has anyone noticed that swede (aka tumshie where I come from) don't seem to last more than a couple of days this year, before they start to go soft and rubbery? As a general rule, they could be relied upon for a good number of days, even up to a couple of weeks, but for some reason this year two days seems to be about the most you'll get. I bought three at Aldi on Friday and prepped them up to freeze them yesterday afternoon.. but already they were even starting to soften.

I live in a big town, and the suburbs have spread out so far they merge with a village. You can tell where the transition to the village is because the street lighting ends.

I don't, I just hate paying alot in council tax then in return get nowt, makes it worse when there is a problem it doesn't get fixed, but you do get people move to village and want to change thing so it's more like a town, 1 comment from a lady who move in near by, "but nowt is open" init dark" etc etc

I dont know, but swede was always one of those veg you picked all winter, often frozen in the ground, maybe they need a hard frost to harden them up.

I haven't bought a swede for ages but I they certainly used to keep for a good couple of weeks in the fridge, maybe more. I did see some in Aldi last week. They looked very small - maybe that's due to the dry spring and summer. And maybe it's no bad thing if they aren't lasting long enough to use a bit and keep the rest for another day.

It does seem to be an anomaly that healthcare is funded nationally but social care is funded locally.

I thought it was me doing something wrong @Fat Controller. I've tried every which way - various parts of the fridge either in plastic or out. A cool room and so on but within days, as you say, it's soft and rubbery. What's gone wrong?

Edit: And the same with carrots.

I have been looking for short breaks to Edinburgh by train but after seeing the prices don't think it will happen. The sites I've checked want about £1200 for 2 people, 4 nights in hotel with breakfast.
We've not long come back from Krakow in Poland which cost about £900. Prices here are crazy.

Sort of glad it isn't only me - I've tried different shops too, including Marks, and they are all the same - and yes, carrots too!

I wouldn't have a swede in the house so wouldn't know @Fat Controller but carrots here are still OK. I do my best not to let Brussels sprouts get in too but sometimes OH sneaks a few in. I definitely have the genes that don't get on with those two veg.

Is it something to do with root vegetables @Fat Controller ? Any other veg seems to be fine. I've not bought parsnips recently, so don't know if they go the same way.

The last swede I bought was like a block of wood, I needed a saw to cut through it. I threw it away and haven't bought one since.
The vegetables I buy from a market stall in a not-far-away town, and the ones I buy in the local open air market in my nearest little town, all keep well. I never buy them in a supermarket, they go off in no time.

Could be - I wonder if the weather caused root veg to form roots/tubers faster than they normally would, so perhaps their fibre is not as dense?
