The trick is to cut off slices that aren't too thick - if you go for the middle, you are near guaranteed to get the knife stuck and end up with a battle.

Can't say I've had that problem, but then we get our milk from the milkman - maybe that is the difference.

Carrots have to be taken out of the plastic immediately you get them home from the supermarket. I keep them in the salad drawer in the fridge. They will start to go soft after a week or so, but they are still fine for soups etc, and I'm told you can crisp them up again by soaking in iced water. It's not something I've ever bothered to do for carrots but can confirm it works well for bendy celery.

I did go through a phase this year where all the carrots just rotted really quickly - not the usual softening, they turned into slime. Must have been something wrong with them, they didn't taste or smell good either. That hasn't happened for a while.

Mangoes I find very hit and miss. Often they look fine, but when you cut them open they're brown inside.

Thanks I will have to try that.
I've heard other people remark about that. I've heard it's because they turn the electricity off when they close for the night, especially in convenience stores etc, so it isn't kept at the right temperature. I always buy milk in the Coop, it's the only one that seems to keep, and it isn't like coloured water.

I went back to supermarket milk because the stuff the milkman was delivering was going off in a couple of days in the summer.
Obviously because it spent so much time unrefrigerated on his van.
I also find the stuff from the local convenience store goes off, I don't think they get the turnover or keep it cold enough on their shelves.

We buy our milk in the big supermarket, and it’s still fine after the use by date. Daughter sometimes bought hers from the local convenience shop, and it often went off before the date. She now makes sure she stocks up somewhere decent, so she doesn’t run out.

I always use semi-skimmed milk which seems to last forever. My daughter buys whole milk and she says it doesn't last a week (she gets a weekly Tesco delivery) unless she buys the filtered stuff.

I think a lot has to do with poor storage, chilled goods sitting around in the back of a shop before been put into a fridge. Then being brought out to sit on the floor in front of the chilled cabinet for an hour before anyone gets round to putting it on the shelves.

I tend to use the Trivago site as it checks all the other sites for the best deals. Me and my Mrs tend to have our short breaks during the week, what some ask for over the weekend is over the top.

There are hotels available in Edinburgh from Monday the 15th December for 4 nights for under £600 including breakfast, the more central you are, the more expensive they will be.

The 5% tourist tax will come into force in Edinburgh from the 24th July 2026, this levy will be implemented on stays of 5 nights or less.

I use some of the holiday booking sites to look at possible hotel options and read reviews, then go direct to the hotel website to actually make a booking. The majority of hotels are now wise to these consolidation websites, and the prices offered for booking direct are often guaranteed to match those offered elsewhere. They also may offer a few extras too, like breakfast included for direct bookings. I prefer to be able to clearly choose the category of room I want, and I am more in control of ‘haggling’ if I don’t think I am getting what I booked. The better rooms in each category seem to be reserved for direct booking customers, while the others are more likely to be allocated the equivalent of the ‘broom cupboard’. If you have any complaints, you’ll be told to address them to the consolidator, as that’s what they’ve booked for you.

Smart move is to stay just outside Edinburgh and travel in when you want the city - somewhere like Dunbar is nice.

@gks @Fat Controller The biggest cost is the rail travel which is nearly £600 for 2, admittedly without any discount cards. I didn't think the actual hotel cost was excessive as we would want to be in the centre of Edinburgh rather than having to trog back and forward each day.
Correction - that price is with 2 Together discount. Full price is 832! I only want 2 tickets, I'm not buying the train.
