My grandmother alway added a sprinkle of sugar on lettuce and that was in the 60s.

Yes, don't understand anyone buying the floppy ones. I ignore them even when they're offered for pennies on the yellow sticker shelf.

Little Gem and Cos (Romaine) are both crisp with a decent flavour (though there's a sweet version of Cos you have to avoid too). Red Gem is nice for a change too.

My MIL thought a salad meant flabby round lettuce, sliced cuucumber and tomato and salad cream. Not to my taste!

We buy little gems every week for OH and sometimes the pack of 3 contains a red one. We both also like oak leaf lettuce but home grown and freshly picked tastes so much better. Then we add rocket and sometives chicory/endive for a bit of bitterness. We like radicchio but never see it so I've grown some and it's just now producing the deep red crisp heart.

I haven't seen a full size Cos/Romaine in months but blanched dandelions are popping up again. Iceberg/Webbs lettuce are rare too but only good if you're doing a retro 70s prawn cocktail. The French like lamb's lettuce which I find bland and soft. Watercress is as rare as hen's teeth which is a shame as we love it.

                That is from my childhood.
My father used to put sugar in cucumber sandwiches.

Mini Romaine are very easy to grow from seed, I've never had a 'miss' in a row, and because they're smaller than the big 'uns there's no waste when you go out and pick just one.

Woops....not very 'moany' that, was it?

In all honesty, I'd be inclined to drive and even split it - so assuming your are going M6, stop around Kendal for an overnight then continue M6>>M74>>A701 the following day.

Train travel is obscenely expensive in this country.

There's probably something going on in Edinburgh that weekend (a sport event maybe). Perhaps you could have an honorary birthday and go on a different weekend. But not during Edinburgh festival, that's always a nightmare for travel and accomodation.

My Nan used to give us celery sticks with sugar to dip them into. If you licked the end of the celery you could get it to pick up a remarkable amount of sugar,
