It so happens that The Child, who works in a large garden, was given free hands with roses they were throwing away as they didn't fit.

I agreed I could fit in a miniature or a patio one, as long as it's pink.

So, yesterday she arrived with three bare root David Austen roses (Hyde hall, Olivia and Scepter d' Isle).

Now what an earth am I going to do with them? I can perhaps fit one into the ground but Hyde Hall is definitely too big for my small urban place.

Would they do ok at least for now in 45cm pots? I have some good terracotta ones free.

Or can they be pruned to narrow shape?

Any ideas? Yes, a lovely problem to have

Sounds worth trying to me. However, I usually plant roses into plastic pots as with JI no 3 compost they are too heavy in terracotta.

That would be fine for 2 or 3 years so long as you keep them watered in hot weather. Terracotta pots dry out faster than plastic ones. Don't forget to feed them either. Ideally 60cm pots would be better for bigger roses but the David Austin website says from 45cm. Do you have a patio big enough?

      Thank you :)

I have potted them up for now, and they are big plants- but also full of healthy looking buds so I might be in for a proper treat :)

The largest, Hyde Hall , will definitely go in the front as my front yard is all paved over to provide ample parking space. I don't have a car so plenty of room to play with.

Now I just wonder why my tatty, practical corner looks less like this (Google photo)

And more like this :frown: :heehee:
