If I try to report a pothole they want all the dimensions. Sadly I don't carry a tape measure with me, nor do I fancy trying to measure a pothole with vehicles whizzing past.

I was once logging on to a savings account (not a posh place) and expecting a 6 digit pin to be texted to me - instead I got one from Goldman Sachs. Then rapidly another text from Goldman apologising. Then the third one was from the correct place. How did that happen?

We had the road sweeper come round today. The lazy chap was about 2 foot away from the edge of the road. All the dirt and stuff is still there.

Reporting a pothole is a joke, if you go on the KCC site there are so many in every street reported you cant work out which report is which hole.

Basically you just have to report the whole street in most cases.

They closed a road around here for patching a couple of weeks ago. I drove down there a couple of days later and they had only done half of the holes the rest had been left, to get worse presumably, before going through the same process yet again.

Here we get someone walk around the streets and spray the edges of anything they think needs addressing. A couple of months later when most of the white spray paint has faded away, we get a couple of people who I don't think are happy in their work. They kind of just chuck some tarmac at the hole and then walk off. I know people don't take pride in their work anymore but it genuinely looks like a child has don't it, there is no attempt at straight lines or even trying to make it flat, it's not cut out first and it takes about as long to do as finding your bucket off tarmac. It really isn't surprising that they last about a week before you gets chunks breaking off again.

It's almost as bad as when they tar and chip the roads with the top dressing. You get a week or two where all the chips fly off, a month or to of it looking ok before it begins to wear down again and looks exactly how it did before after about a year. I do wonder where all those chips go and I'd guess it's why all the drains are blocked. I know it's a cheaper way of doing it but surely it's a false economy in the long run.

I think the chips wedge in tyre treads if mine are anything to go by.

Just back from the dental hygienist; why do they always poke at the gums with a sharp pointy bit of metal, comment on any bleeding they cause and then tell you you need to improve your oral hygiene because your gums bleed. They wouldn't bleed if they didn't get jabbed with a sharp bit of metal!

I have a hygenist appt next week. It's not the jabbing with sharp implements that is the most painful part. It is the bill at the end. :hate-shocked: The most expensive 20 mins I spend all yr.

No complaints about my dental hygienist - he knows to be careful. I go 3 times a year but the cost has increased dramatically - now £70.

I dont think I've ever seen a dental hygienist, its never been suggested I should either, the dentist has had a scale and polish on a couple of occasions but I think that was mostly done to justify the bill.

Not been to a dentist seen i left school, the only teeth that give me any problems is the ones that the dentist filled, i keep breaking the corners off them slowly, the last time i went i had to be carryed out to the car, i think they gave me to much knock out juice, but i do know the the knock out juice doesn't work well with me, i even went the the eye hosipal to have something taken out of my eye, i said the knock out juice isn't very good on me so he gave me the normal amount ;) and he couldn't even get near my eye  so in went some more and that worked a treat :yahoo: but i had to wait a lot longer before he would let be drive home

Our NHS dentist used to do a 'scale and polish' if they thought it beneficial. Last time I went they said I might benefit from seeing the hygienist and the cost was only £70. Think I'll pass on that one. Never seen a hygienist in the past, I'm now 75 and still have both of my teeth.

When checking for signs of gum disease, there is a blunt pointer-like instrument with mm markings on it. If the gum is healthy, the rounded end won’t make it bleed. If the gum has become infected, it will pull away from the tooth and root, creating a pocket. The depth of the pocket can be measured by looking at the markings on the end of the probe.
What I do find really annoying is when NHS dentists pass their patients on to a hygienist, and make them pay extra for a scale and polish. The lowest band of NHS treatment includes the checkup, any X-rays required, and a scale and polish if needed. Rather naughty in my opinion, as you’d be paying twice. However, it’s fairly irrelevant as so few people can find an NHS dentist anyway.
In my day, the dentist had to identify a clinical need for a scale and polish, and take responsibility for ensuring it was done safely eg under antibiotic cover for anyone with a relevant medical problem. Now it seems as if patients can refer themselves to a hygienist, almost as if it was some kind of cosmetic procedure. I’d be interested to know if the hygienist also takes the time to do the all important oral hygiene instruction, and teach you how to keep your teeth clean, and use any necessary aids like interdental brushes and sticks, or floss, to reduce the need for the next scaling!

Our pothole reporting site asks if the hole is wider than a dinner plate. Much easier to visualise than inches or centimetres!
We can certainly identify the local drivers round here, as they slow down before certain bits of road, while the visitors sail gaily into the dips at normal speed, with teeth jolting results.
