Picking up on an earlier topic about red and white flowers and the Wars of the Roses [IMG]

The Gallica Roses are the oldest of all garden roses and date back to classical times. Rosa officinalis is the Apothecaries Rose and said to be the Red Rose of Lancaster.

The Alba Roses are another very old group and Rosa alba maxima is the White Rose of York and also the Jacobite Rose of Bonny Prince Charlie. [IMG]

Rosa mundi is a Gallica Rose and looks wonderful in her candy stripes.

Maiden's Blush is another early Alba Rose that would have been grown in medieval gardens

These beautiful roses have a freshness and charm that is sometimes lost with modern cultivars. They flower profusely and are no trouble. Their only disadvantage is that they do not repeat. They are tough too and never get black spot or mildew! I grew these plants in our former garden and moved them when they were mature plants in August 1992 to our present garden. They still flourish and have hundreds of blooms every year. :D
