Another tree I'd like to identify. It's a Magnolia and the flowers are past their best now but hopefully someone can suggest a name. Flower is about 4" across, normally upturned but to get pic I had to bend a branch down. It's tall - 15ft+ but grows amongst other trees and if pos I'd like to propagate it.

Possibly, Magnolia "Stellata" although it is a bit late flowering, but where you are that might be right as you would be behind us here in the Midlands.

According to my book,it says branches can be layered in early summer, but have never tried it.
It also says cuttings can be taken in summer, but is difficult-A heated propergator is needed.

Might be a good idea to check it out on google,as my book is quite old-Dr Hessayons tree and shrub expert.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help and possible ID Kandyfloss It's quite sheltered and in a lot of shade which could expain why it's so late. I'll have a look and see if there is a branch low enough and suitable for layering. I tried hardwood cuttings last autumn but they didn't come to anything. Not surprised really as they were only done on an off chance.

Just had a look on Google, and it says that the best method for propagation is by grafting onto another Magnolia.

Seed can be sown fresh in the Autumn, but if successful, they can take up to 20 years to flower.

Hope you are young enough to wait that long!!

    Good Luck
