Can anyone give me some advice about growing Green and Red Peppers, like the ones you get from the supermarkets as I have taken on two Guneia Pigs and they love eating them.I have taken out some of the seeds and so fancied growing them, but don't know a thing about their growing needs....Many thanks on behalf of Punky and Mabel :D

Their photos are in Members Hobbies under Punky and Mabel if any one wants to see them [IMG]

    Hi Kandy

We have been growing peppers in the greenhouse for years. We don't do anything special but treat them just the way we treat our tomatoes. Germinate seeds in your favourite medium, pot on when they get to a reasonable size, plant in large pots or gro-bags, water well, feed when flowers visible. I don't know whether we should be doing anything else but we always get a good crop.

Oh! One other thing. Talk to them nicely. [IMG]

Thanks for that Shiney.can they be grown outside at all?Because we usually empty the greenhouse completly of plants so there is just the staging left.It gives the neighbours less watering to do.Just a thought. If the answer is no then we will have to remove some of the staging..

I talk to all my plants. It's when they start talking back is when I shall get worried :D

Don't worry about them talking back. I hear voices all the time. [IMG]

There is no problem in moving them outside once it is warm and no chance of them being hit by frost.

Grew some red/green sweet peppers last year and they kept growing happily until decimated by the first frost which was late last year so the last green ones were taken off begining November (in unheated greenhouse). Very slow to turn red after September when the light level falls. As shiney has said, treat and feed same as toms. 12" pot, grow bag or plant outside if you have a warm spot. Like toms they do need a fair bit of watering so make sure they don't dry out.

I've never tried it myself but I know others have had success with seed taken from ripe red supermarket peppers. Chillis can also be grown this way.

The only thing I could add is to water them in the morning rather than the evening as they don't like sitting in cold damp soil overnight.

Peppers are slow growers. If you can start them now in a propagator you will be glad you did later [IMG]

      Yer a good girl Kandy
      They will love you [IMG]
Make sure to give them sunlight when they sprout....
We use a home made propagator (thanks Tirella) with heated sandy floor and a light on a timer to bring everything to life at this time of year
AND ... the time changes this week end so Summer must be here LOL
OK ... off to cut the grass [IMG]
