The problem with the Eu is epitomised by the change to european vehicle registration documents some three years ago. All that was different was the coulor of the papr and the layout of the information, the conent was and is the same. £££s to the tax payer later.

As farr as I know industrial fishing still continues.

I 'm not sure but I think a lot of the Scaninavian countries go in for fishing for fertilizer.
Whoever it is its got to be the daftest idea yet.

It makes me wonder (due to the favourable exchange rates, pound/dollar) why we are paying so much for petrol.
The old excuse a few years ago was that oil had to be bought in dollars on the world market, bearing that in mind we should be actually paying less now, even though the price of oil has risen.
God knows what will happen when the pound does start to slide against the dollar.

We are paying so much for petrol cause of the tax on it. I think it might be something like 75%. Apart from a source of revinue it would be in the government's interest to hold oil imports down - balance of payments. Also a higher price tends to make the manufacturers work at fuel efficiency - just compare our cars with American cars.
When the price of crude went up a lot it did not make that much difference to our prices but it did to the Americans and they were moaning, but their prices still seemed incredibly cheap.

Yeah, but I'm comparing our prices now with our prices some time ago.
What happens in America is nothing to do with us.
The tax effect means that the last thing the government want is us using less petrol, so forcing fuel ecomomy on manufactures doesn't enter into it.
Just go back a few years to when the only thing on the road using diesel was a lorry or a van, diesel was cheaper than petrol, now its the other way around, for some STRANGE reason.
I know you get more mpg out of diesel but the price gap is widening.

While we've been in the EU we haven't had a war between the usual warlike nations. (I'm thinking North European) Surely that counts for something? [IMG]

The government does want us to use less petrol because we import the oil and it affects our trade balance. Also if they are to come anywhere near their carbon targets they have to reduce it. Notice that the new really efficient cars don't pay road tax, as an incentive.
Petrol is not that expensive compared to how it was in relative terms. We have recently gone through a number of years of relatively cheap petrol. It may not have seemed like it but for a long time wages rose faster than petrol so it got relatively cheaper.
As for cars they are really cheap compared to when I first started driving.

Hmm you are going back a bit..we have not had a fight with the Norwegians and Swedes for a while now. The Germans in West Europe and the Italians and Turks in Southern Europe are a different matter ...can't you tell I am a geography teacher. [IMG]

Somehow, I dont think its the EU that is stopping wars in Europe.
Lets face it, what was that all about in Bosnia, and one or two other places around that area a few years back, (you can tell I'm not a geography teacher) :D
Europe is a very different place these days, and most of it has nothing to do with the EU.
