Now that we are getting some snow,it would be nice if everyone can remember all the wild birds out there that will find it hard to forage for food underneath the snow and also when the ground is frozen.Bird feeders and food can be brought at many retail outlets including supermarkets...Nuts are a favourite for many birds and seed sprinkled on the ground is good for groundfeeders...They also like rotting apples, suet and some bread....

If using tubular feeders please don't forget to wash them out in hot water before refilling as that will help keep diseases at bay...

If the birds are fed throughout the winter they will reward you with eating aphids and leather jackets in the summer months and if you are lucky enough like us you may have them nesting in your garden...

They also need fresh drinking water, and a large flowerpot saucer will be ok if the budget doesn't stretch to anything fancy...

    Thankyou [IMG]

I spend a fortune on food for the wild birds. They are gourmet fed round here, but with home made products. I mix soft lard with suet, bread crumbs, muesli, sultanas, nuts and bird seed. I also spend Ã?£3 pw on mealy worms for 4 fat robins in our garden and Ã?£10 per fornight for sunflower seeds and peanuts. :D There isn't a shortage of sparrows in the uk, they just flock round our garden. My chickens get well fed too. they get all the veg and baked leftovers mixed with their meal and it's warmed for them. (and it's been known that when i bake, i do extra for all the birds, hens and wild) [IMG] The eggs are wonderful. Hubby gets cross, as he has no cold spuds to fry the next morning for breakfast as the hens or birds are given 1st option. He wishes he was as well thought of. But he doesnt lay eggs. [IMG]

I love it Compostee, he doesn't lay eggs.He would be worth a fortune if he could lay eggs.We must think of our feathered friends,as they are something for future generations to study and admire, and not some stuffed specimen in a glass display box all moth eaten :D :D

I cant feed the birds here being on the top floor its a bit difficult as the neighbours downstairs would complain, never mind when no one is around i chuck bread out on top of the garages and more often enough we get the flaming seagulls :D :D

Try chucking sunflower hearts instead Rosa - now if you were to get a flag pole, and dangle a feeder at the end, then that shouldn't bother your neighbour.

these are on ebay but i'm sure you could get them elsewhere. never tried 1 myself, but have been told by people that they have them and they are used regularly.I've even heard stories of robins tapping on the window to inform the human feeder that all the food had gone!!!

birds are pretty tollerant of humans if food is invloved, they normally just need time to find the feeders and get used to them.

The birds were feeding very well from our feeders today but I decided to throw some seed all over the snow on the back lawn as well. The birds kept on going to the feeders and didn't touch the feed on the ground. I suppose they wanted to keep their feet warm and dry!

Mrs shiney has just said that the pheasants have found the feed on the ground and are really enjoying it.
