101 is the number to call when you want to contact your local police - when it's less urgent than 999. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Find out how you can use it and if it is available in your area.

The 101 service is currently available in the following areas:
    • Wales
    • Hampshire and the Isle of Wight
    • London
    • Essex
    • Sussex
    • Hertfordshire
    • Sheffield
What you can report using 101

Call 101 to contact the police to report less urgent crime and disorder or to speak to your local officers. For example, call 101:
    • if your car has been stolen
    • if your property has been damaged
    • if you suspect drug use or dealing in your local area
    • to report a minor traffic accident
    • to give the police information about crime in your area
    • to speak to the police about a general enquiry
In Sheffield, you can also call 101 if you have problems with:
    • vandalism and graffiti
    • noise nuisance
    • abandoned vehicles
    • dumping and fly tipping
    • broken street lighting
When you should use 999 instead

In an emergency always call 999.
    You should call 999 if:
    • a crime is in progress
    • someone suspected of a crime is nearby
    • there is danger to life
    • violence is being used or threatened
If you call 101 but you are reporting an emergency, you will be directed to the 999 service.

What does it cost to call 101?

Calls to 101 (from both landlines and mobiles) cost 15 pence per call no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
How long do you think it will take for people to think of dialling 101 instead of 999?

Do you think that the charge for the call (although it is only 15p) will encourage people to still call 999?

Do you think there should be a charge for the call? (I think this could be a contentious issue with arguments on both sides.)

They, naturally, can't give you a list of all emergency and non-emergency crimes but would you want a more comprehensive list?

e.g. You come home and find that your house has been broken into.

Do the police consider there is a difference between the crimes if you are broken into but nothing is stolen and no further damage done and where there is damage done and/or items stolen? To the homeowner all these are traumatic!

Here's a link to the Government's website about this innovation.

Depends on whether it's worth more than 15p!

I think the idea is a good one, people dial 999 for the most stupid of reasons perhaps it will free up the emergency service calls a little bit?? :dunno:

I've got the numbers stored on my phone,

01305 222222 Dorset Police non emergency.

        0845 4567000 Avon & Somerset non emergency.

Its suprising how often they are needed.

I don't need to memorise their number. They pop round often enough. They were round again the other day looking for a different ex resident.

I once had to phone 999 while driving down the motorway. Actually I made the wife do it as I was driving. There was a 4x4 driving very eratically and was going to cause a major accident. He kept drifting from lane to lane randomly and a couple of times nearly drove sideways on into a lorry. About 4 minutes after being put on hold, I did the running commentary and the wife relayed it over the phone. I gave our location fairly accurately, down to how many miles we've covered since junction whatever. Suddenly 4x4 man floored it, and I passed that on. I was doing 80mph at the time, already speeding a bit so I could see to give the details over. I even told the coppers this. When the 4x4 floored it, I was left standing, he must have accelerated to over 100mph. Can you guess what the operator asked me to do? They actually asked me to chase him so I could get a closer look. I refused of course. There are plenty of cameras and patrol cars along the M1, and highly trained high speed pursuit drivers. They didn't need me to push my 10 year old diesel Vectra to the limits risking the lives of my wife and son and me, just to do their job for them.

Although it's a good idea in principle, easy to understand and use for even the most mildly intelligent among us, the type of fool who rings for an ambulance for a broken finger nail or the police for a stolen snowman is still going to dial 999 because clearly to them they class that as a major emergency for it to even cross their mind to call 999 in the first place. God help them if they ever have a real emergency, they'll probably expire on the spot from the shock of real life!

I`ve actually used the 101 service. Went to a clients old property (vacant) and found the front door kicked in. Dialled 101, explained the problem, they had someone there within the hour. all sorted.
