Hi guys. We're thinking of going to Tunisia (Sousse) this year for our main holiday. Does anyone know if the snorkelling is good there. We know the beaches are fine for sunbathing but that doesn't mean they're good for snorkelling. We don't expect coral reefs, we're just happy to see fish. We're going in Sept/Oct.:)

    Oh dear, feeling unloved Cajary?

I went to Tunisia year ago and thought it was a lovely place, great scenery, great beaches and fairly cheap (out of the Eurozone will help too). Can't comment on the snorkelling though...but the archaeological sites are something to behold (it was part of the Roman Empire for almost 700 years and one of the most fertile parts of the Empire).

Weather when you're going should be good too - warm but not baking. I went at the opposite end of the year (start of May).

Ive been to Tunisia Caj, Sorry cant help with the snorkling. Its a place where the locals struggle to make a living as there is no industry. I found the transfer from the airport a bit of an eye opener as it is a poor country. The hotels are spot on but everyone is out to make a buck. I found it a bit of an eye opener as everyone wants to carry your bags etc for a few bob. As long as you are forewarned. Nobody does anything for nothing. The booze is very expensive, so buy on the plane if you can. ;)

Forgot to mention, it's a closed currency so you have to take the exchange rate offered at the hotel, etc.

Thanks for the replies, guys. :gnthb:
Pete,"using my snorkel in the bath" brings back lots of memories from my childhood but maybe not what you mean.:hehe: Yep, you're right. The other hoilday is when we take the g-children away for a week. Not sure that's a holiday, more like crowd control, damage control and lion-taming all together, glad to get back to work for a rest.

Looking forward to the history bit. I'm interested in ancient history and Carthage gave Rome a good run for its money. If Hannibal had been an "Alexander" history would have been a bit different.
It sounds a bit like Egypt and Kenya, You're always a mark. I don't mind tipping people a couple of bob for carrying your bags etc. They are poor countries. We'll also try a trip in the desert at night, we like to see the stars with no light pollution.:)
As regards the alcohol bit, we'd need a forklift to get the booze from the 'plane.:lollol: We'll go all-inclusive, solves all the problems:wink:

Hi Sussex. I forgot to ask. If it's a closed economy, does that mean you get better deals if you offer to pay in £'s $'s etc. when you're dealing with the locals? Or does that mean you get chucked in a slammer if you try?

Sorry Cajary, virtually all the archaeological sites in Tunisia are Roman or later. The Romans destroyed all the original Carthaginian cities...even Carthage stood as a ruin for 100 years until it was re-founded as a Roman colony...

However the sites are still impressive, including a very well preserved amphitheatre (better than the Colosseum in Rome) out in the desert (Roman Africa, as the area was then called, used to be a lot more fertile than now), plus you can go and see where they filmed the original Star Wars!

Never had any problems with alcohol. Tunisia is a very liberal society, as far as Muslim countries go. I can't advise you on the currency question though - we paid with the local money. We had to spend everything we had as the banks here will not change back anything you bring home.

Thanks Sussex. I'll make it a point to irritate the guides with questions about how close the Rome/Carthage dispute was. LoL
As regards the currency thing, we'll have a look when we're out there.
