That's just it, though, isn't it? We're all doomed anyway. You might think some of us are being a bit jingoistic (actually, why not? Why is it OK for everyone else to be intensely patriotic but not us?) but since we're all going to hell in a handcart I'd rather we were controlling it, even if we end up steering the thing in the wrong direction.

How about Norway and Switzerland? They seem to have managed OK without the European experiment.

      Hi ClaraLou.

When I referred to jingoism, my main thrust was aimed at comments regarding the British Empire. We were great before and we can be great again? I very much doubt it. The Roman empire had it's day, and now we've had ours, imo. Better start planting potatoes folks!

Their economies are tiny in comparison. They probably don't rely so heavily on the EU, dunno.

drop the dole and force people to work .... that is the solution IMHO

keep the dole only for those who are sickly or cannot work

I work 7 days a week .... struggle to make ends meet, ... and today was one of the few days this year that I have not worked ....

yet in my street there are several who have large council homes, are on benefits, and have been on benefits for the 11+ years I have been here

they drive nice cars, go on holidays and go to the local pub most nights of the week

Sure, but there aren't any jobs! Maybe we should go back to serfdom?

Hmmm .... empire .... thinks ..... we used to own rather a lot of France, didn't we? Now, that might wipe the unpleasant smirk from Sarcozy's face. :heehee:

Agincourt! (Most of the archers were Welsh, Dai.)

Can't see Cameron as a warlord, though. :(

... were Norsemen, actually. But they did learn French. Which is more than most of their English subjects managed to do.

I don't see any English picking strawberries in Cambridge? ... I see less and less UK builders in my area? ... All done by Eastern Europeans

even my local Tesco has a huge selection of Polish food.... and they have a carwash run by Eastern Europeans .... they are 'minting it'

there is lots of work, but people here rely too much on the dole and don't want to work for cheap

        That is fact

Going a bit off-topic ... but they had that guy on the telly the other night who always gets wheeled out whenever the subject of dole gets an airing. He looks about twelve and wrote a book called 'Chavs', or something. Anyway, he said that many people don't realise that Jobseeker's allowance is only sixty-odd quid a week, and is almost impossible to live on. I accept this, because I have friends who worked and paid taxes all their lives, only to find that they were entitled only to this humiliating pittance, out of which they were expected to attend interviews and engage in an intensive job search, as well as feed themselves.

However, I feel he is being a little economical with the truth. The major expenditure for most of us is on our rent/mortgage, whereas there seem to be a fair number of families in my area who have things taken care of by the state. This means they're also exempt from some other bills, and if they manage to produce a few kids along the way, they're probably doing better than some of my neighbours who are in awful jobs on low incomes.

Always makes me smile when Agincourt is described as an English victory!

Dim, most of these people are " too depressed " to get off their state financed, fat backsides to fend for themselves. As you have found out, if you put your mind to it, you can mow a lawn or dig a garden or plant a shrub. Just do it properly and you will earn a living and gain some self respect.
