OK, sorry for the newbie question but here are the basics.

    - Recently moved house and now have a lot larger lawn to sort (4-5 tennis court size in 3 sections).
    - Grass growing through thick moss.
    - Need to get on top of it and get a the lawn sorted.

    So, where do I start?

I have very little knowlege but I am keen to learn.

I have no tools so need to source new equipment (previous Mountfield simply not 'Man' enough to cut the grass. Tried it once during the very warm weekend in October, took me 4 hours!

    - What do I need to apply to lawn areas and when.
    - What tools do I require to fectch the moss out.
    - What mower do I need to look out for / avoid (perhaps new thread required in differenct section for tools?).

As you can see, I am at a loss of how & where to start & what is needed, all comments welcome.

if there is lots of moss, the problem could be too much shade .... post a pic so we can see what shrubs/trees are on the boundaries (if any)

if there are none, then you may have a drainage problem ... you will need to aerate the lawn .... if the ground is soft, that can be done now

you can add a general lawn fertilizer with moss killer in spring ... then you will need to scarify

as for lawnmowers, look a a decent petrol .... if the ground is large, get a self propelled .... it all depends on your budget, but bargains can be found on ebay with 2nd hand mowers

    OK, thanks. :thumb:

Will get some pics at the weekend of the areas affected.

Perhaps could be shade on one part, and I think poor drainage on another.

To aerate a large lawn would a machine be better?

I am right in saying that you can get a scarify machine that can also aerate?

Will check out some threads on mowers.

I just love spending time in the garden!
