Last week I was in the garden when a lens fell out of my glasses. Luckily the lens fell onto grass and didn't break but on taking my glasses off I found the frame had broken at the bridge. They weren't cheap when I bought them 3 years ago, as I have Zeiss glass vari-focus Lens with a Kodak factor to make them thinner, and the frame was one of the "bendable" ones. I've tried plastic lenses but they scratch too easily and are useless within months!! So I took the lens and broken frame back to the Opticians with the intention of getting the lens put back into a similar frame.....only to be told "Sorry, that frame is no long in stock and a search of our frames can't find anything similar." I wear glasses permanently and was wearing an old pair as a last resort so I was faced with buying another pair. Again because I am hard on glasses I went for a tough frame from made of titanium and the prescription Zeiss glass vari-focus lenses again........they were nearly twice the price at £610!!! I will visit some other Opticians to see if they have frames to fit the original lenses but have had to buy this pair as I need them for work........but I'm not happy with the price and feel as though they taken advantage of my predicament, which is silly thinking......as of course they have.:dunno: So at the moment I'm back to wearing a old pair of glasses for driving and another for reading and computer work, which is a pain!!

    £610 in feel your pain!
I wear special rgp contact lenses because I had to have a corneal transplant on my right eye 4 years ago. Waiting for the left eye to be done as well now. I was under the NHL for my lenses but because I see a specialist closer to where I live they won't pay! With the disease in my eyes my prescription changes between every 6 to 12 months!
The lenses I wear are £120 each :hate-shocked:
But you can't put a price on your eye sight!

Just bought the same two weeks ago Similar price ouch

Same varifocal, zeis glass, various protective coatings and extra thin
The frames I prefer are the rimless, titanium, and very thin sides
Thus the expense (these survived the Grandkids ripping them off and dropping them over their shoulder)
The only reason I bought again was the protective coatings were wearing where I clean the lenses, and I had a small return from the Tax man :-)

I know people who have bought on the internet from China, same things for £80
just send the prescription and voila they come back in a couple of days

The only trouble I would have with that is the fact mine are varifocal, and for
that you have to have an optician mark out the pupil posn and focus
So it would be good for standard glasses

Good luck in your search for a better outcome

Well, I had to buy the glasses, Jack, as I do need them. But I will go visiting other Opticians to see if they have frames to fit the original lenses. As you say, Mowgley, you can't put a price on eyesight....but for sure, Opticians do!!!

If its any consolation Armandii, even Specsavers aren't cheap once you go for 'decent' frames and stuff. We went for our renewals in February, and put simply couldn't have afforded it if were not for the credit card.

It's just that feeling, FC, that they know they're got a "captive" customer and make the most of it. I don't like the fact they couldn't find a frame to fit the original lenses in all of their stock...........was that because they wanted to make the maximum profit???:snork: I did use Spec Savers some years ago but their glasses would only last weeks before a frame arm would break or come off and they were getting increasingly unfriendly after my third or fourth return so I left and went else where.:dunno:

I went to specsavers and got a pair of varifocals and a pair of reading glasses for a couple of hundred.
Mind you, the varifocals are useless.
      They make everything look curved.

I bought a more expensive pair of varifocals some years ago from another smaller opticians, had those frames you could tie in a knot.
Every straight line looked curved through them as well, but specsavers assured me that things had improved since I bought them.

Its all a con, rip off Britain strikes again.
I shall get my next pair from the local ironmongers, but I'm lucky, I only really need them for reading and work, my distance vision is still pretty good.

Armandii, one of my clients have their own spectacle making company, and they are very cheap! They are online as well as being just up the road from my shop, here's her website:-

Just give them your prescription and they'll make them for you. If you need to talk to them first, just give them a bell. The owners name is janet styles. :blue thumb:

Thanks, al, what I need is an optician that can fit my original [and expensive vari-focal Zeiss glass lenses] lenses in a frame that they have.:dunno::snork:

See if they have your old frame in stock, if they have, then get it posted and take the frame and your lenses to the local optician :blue thumb: Worth a try?

Is it that particular frame your after so you can retrofit your existing lenses?

You done a search on 'tinterwebage to see if you can get them?

Yeah, al, the idea is that the lens were expensive at the start [£156 per lens] so it's seem wasteful not to retrofit them and still make use of them. I'll try that site and see what happens.......the advice is greatly appreciated:snork:
