Not to the depth of many of the GC greats. But it's suprising what you DO know and how impressed friends are when they ask for ID's or advice isn't it. My Achilles Heel is Pruning, Anne. I'm virtually clueless and useless with secatuers and shears.

Mine to - my moto is often 'chop it and lop it' and let nature takes its course. I have to admit that I can't always wait for the right time.

        This is still puzzling me.
That is Pic 10 in 1st batch... taken 24th July,
(should help, but I cannot see the flowers?)
Pic 6 on the 2nd lot of pics... the shrub now appears to have lost all the petals.
Last pic shows it with just calyx left, the swollen parts will contain seeds soon.

        I am stuck.
I hope someone else can help.
If not then wait until next year and add a good pic to this post, to show the flower in full bloom.

Looking at web images I think the mystery plant is indeed philadelphus. From memory the little white flowers with yellow centres were there during early summer.

Top effort guys, I now have to prune and tidy everything up, lots of dead material and grasses about.

You will need to be very careful about pruning all your great new plants.
If you pruned at the wrong time you will lose any chance of flowers for a year.
Many of your shrubs look fine without any pruning to me.
Just go slowly and research each one.
The Prunus laurocerasus/ Cherry laurel does get HUGE. Maybe not suitable for a small garden.

Especially the Euphorbia, as the sap can be quite a nasty skin irritant.
