Awww, bless you Nick - I'm no expert, I assure you; all I can do is pass on stuff that I have picked up as I've gone along in the hope that others won't get caught out.

The AAZ - is that the one fitted to the B5 Passat, Vento etc from around 1998-2000? Peach of an engine if it is, and at a bargain price for you. Not unusual to see them doing over 200k quite easily, so you should get many happy miles from yours :)

PS - I'd change the water pump at the same time as doing the belt if I were you; £30 or so well spent in my opinion - my mates Vectra suffered a collapsed bearing on the water pump which resulted in 8 knackered valves.

Ouch! Fixing them is getting to be an expensive business nowadays - that was the main reason that I chopped the Passat in for the Audi. It had been doing a kangaroo diesel thing on and off for ages, and getting slowly worse, until it was so bad a couple of weeks ago I completely lost the rag with it.

I went and got a fuel filter, however when putting it in I found crud all down the front of the block and the alternator - turns out that the inlet manifold was leaking, and the price of the part alone was £480-ish! That, coupled with it needing a cambelt & water pump before April, and a major service, front discs and pads, and a front anti roll bar, and the bill was now looking nearer £1500, which I don't have and really didn't want to spend on a car that I was only intending on keeping another 6-12 months anyway.

Makes the £8 a week that I have added to my outgoings look like a complete no brainer to be honest.

Ah, the days of fashioning exhaust bits from old scaffolding poles and biscuit tins (please tell me that you are doing something a little more 'engineered' FM?

Will the bike exhaust give enough back pressure to prevent engine damage?
