Today I sent an email to someone on Hotmail
I explained that I was now retired aged 65 and a bit

Within an hour every google or youtube access I get an advert
    for a Funeral Plan

Never had it before the hotmail email :-(

Well I am not going to use hotmail
I am just concerned that I emails someone at THEIR hotmails address
and the information in the email has generated adverts for death and
funeral arrangements, Intimating that all email to hotmail is read and
        disected for advertising purposes

        Hiya Jack.

I doubt that someone is sifting through messages by 'hand'. It's probably the case that it's automated, using 'keywords'. Can't trust anything these days!

Yep, I'm afraid its true. Microsoft do in fact profile you based on your Hotmail email. They're not alone though. Google know pretty much everything about your internet habits. Both companies have been done a number of times for 'trust' related violations.

The best thing to do is confuse their profiling engines a bit by randomly searching for/posting stuff that is totally off the wall.

For anyone here on Facebook, don't 'like' or comment on posts that are not from your friends, you are giving companies access to your data. There are a lot of 'do you remember' posts about which is a clever way of age profiling :(

I'm a bit ignorant in these newfangled computer thingies, but does clearing cookies help a bit?

Yes Keep your 'history' and cookies cleared everyday. If I use a sensitive website like my bank account for instance then I will clear my history and cookies immediately afterwards before hopefully they can be used by anyone, or that is my theory. It does mean that you end up having to log into GC each time after but I'd rather that than give others my history of use of my pc.

It helps a bit, but it wont do anything to prevent sites you visit from selling details of your activities there.

Also use an Add-on for Firefox and others called Do Not Track Plus. We have had far fewer targeted adverts since we got it.

Moyra, if you're using IE, couldn't you do banking etc in 'In Private Browsing'?
