Just a quick addition to those who have had this done back in the 70's and 80's.
It had been made up of FOC's which are as follows:-
    http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/Health/ResearchAreas/EnvironmentHealth/IEH/IEH publications/vocslflt.pdf
Urea and Formaldehyde are the main ingredients to produce the foam in the cavities.
If you have this in your walls, like we do then it degrades and leaves you with a cavity full of dust which is harmful to all. We have tried to get this removed and new fill put in, to our shock we would have to pay over £7k for it to be removed and then another £2k to fill the cavities with a product which will not react with the residual compounds left in the cavity.
At best we have to leave the cavities as they are and wait to see if the government will change what has been a difficult time for us. There must be loads of people out there in the same situation as us, but we are not privy to that information(or they will not release that to us). We have been fighting to get our walls insulated for the past 10 yes TEN years now to no avail. They say it has been 26yrs since it was done and the warranty have lapsed, so we get no assistance from CIGA or the powers that be.
We now end up with the heating on for long periods and suffer with several of the ailments which are not helping health matters at present.
I am very passionate about this as the effects of the dust in the cavities is going to ensure we have to get this removed and we lose out financially to boot.:nonofinger:

Sorry to hear that, Landimad. I had my wall cavity insulation done about 4 years ago and they used glass powder to fill the cavities. It has made a difference, even to my cynical mind, as the house does maintain warmth much easier.:snork:

That is terrible Landimad. I remember all the problems at the time during the 70s when the cowboy companies were installing the Urea foam insulation, I never realised there were still issues all these years later.

Trouble is now, its left to the likes of joe public to clear it up and the companies are getting away with this after their 25 year holiday if nobody looks into it.
I used a Boriscope to have a look into the cavities and boy what an eye opener that was. All manner of muck and dust in there, even tools which the builders had dropped when they were building the house. Ties had cement on them and there was even a few broken bricks in there. Just shows that even the trades can be held accountable for not keeping the cavities clear.
If finance was not the worry, I would to be truthful, self build a place that would have been so much better than what they have produced over the years. We all have our own ideas and opinions of what could be incorporated into the build.

Anyway, extractor fan has been checked, safely, and no insulation blocking this... so...onto the next check in the loft...and no, i won't be up there, so i won't fall through the ceiling. :blue thumb: Jobs for the boys, so best left up to them! :)

      Update to this one too!

Survey was done a week or so ago, all fine with no nasties hidden away. Landlord permission given and signed, and the installation is being done on the 20th.

Fingers crossed that it makes a big difference, as I have just had to go and put the heating back on as I was sat here with a cold nose.

Hi FC coming in a bit late here.. I cannot have it done as I live in an old cottage with 18" thick solid outside walls..!!! However we did for my O/Hs parents who had a cavity wall house.... It was the best thing we did.. It reduced their heating bills by a good 20%.. The house was pretty cosy anyway, but after having it done the difference was very noticeable.. It also keeps it much cooler in the summer too, which makes it very pleasant in there the summer I can tell you... ;)
We also noticed a quite significant reduction in noise as well, so if you can get it done I really would my friend.. :blue thumb:

Sorry, should have said - 20th of Feb.

Essex Insulation are doing it on behalf of British Gas, and so far their service has been impressive.

Thanks Marley Farley, that is good to hear, as I don't do well with the heat in the summer (being northern blooded and all  ); I must admit there is a wee bit of me that hopes we have it cold until the end of Feb, just so that I can see if we feel the difference!

              Update - they have been today and done the job, and a very tidy job they did too. The attention to detail was remarkable, in particular to air-bricks and how they filled the holes that they made to put the stuff in with;

Everyone that I have been in contact with has been extremely friendly and helpful, the installers arrived when they said they would, and they took great care to clean up behind themselves.

Better still, the guys installing it noticed that our porch wasn't heated and was double skinned, so they decided to do that for us as well while they were there.

And the end result is that the house already feels much warmer (I had to turn a couple of radiators down earlier), and it seems to be holding its heat better since the heating has gone off. I'm really chuffed with it.

In case anyone is considering doing this, I can highly recommend Essex Insulation.
