Whilst out in the garden this evening I heard a plane coming over and even before I saw it I knew from the unmistakeable spine tingling sound of the engine it was to be a rare sighting of a Spitfire :), it circled overhead twice, reasonably low before heading off, somewhat fittingly into the early evening sunset - Awesome :dbgrtmb:

Me too, I'm only 38 years young :heehee: but have always preferred watching (indeed hearing) the planes of yesteryear :)

I know exactly what you mean Bilbo, it's one of those sounds you recognize instantly, before you've even spotted it you just know it's a Spitfire.

We're lucky enough to see them quite often around here, I think there are several based at Duxford and they often pass over this way en route to their various displays and flypasts.

Talking of instantly recognizable aircraft sounds, just a few days ago I was stopped in my tracks in the back garden by the distant but unmistakable sound of a Dakota. Sure enough, a few seconds later one of these venerable old birds appeared over the horizon and flew sedately across the sky, instantly transporting me back to my childhood, when they were a frequent sight and sound in the skies around here. :)

I love Spitfires, greatest Aeroplane to ever take to the skies, along with cousin Hurricane.

Its a great sound, rarely heard around here these days, maybe three or four times each summer.

On a different note, we quite often get Chinooks come over, you can tell one of those long before you see it.

We seem to be under the flight path for Apache helicopters here when they're moving bases etc, quite often seen them coming over 4 at a time :), also see the Chinooks too :)

I used to have land where the army were aloud to use it for training for the young Chinooks pilots

We get the Chinooks here from time to time - I believe they are based not far south of me. I must confess that I do like the sound of a good engine; even some of the large diesel units have their own charm. Google for a clip of a Gardner 6LXB, and you will see what I mean.

Ah, we digress. A wonderful aircraft is the Chinook, no doubt superior in it's class.

Alas for the Chinook, the beauty of the Spit, will forever remain, that raw of power, the grace in the air, a flying mans dream....... along with her cousin Hurricane, helped keep these precious Islands free from tyranny, and enabled us to find the resource to fight back.

If When,I make a 'Bucket List', a flight in a Spitfire will be in the top 3, oh I must add, I hate flying, and have only done so 8 times, and that is on passenger planes ! :help:

I am afraid that I have an addiction other than plants and Bacardi - and its basically anything with an engine, oily bits, mechanical bits, electrics or electronics; I've never been on a plane, nor have I even been on a ship, but I am very interested in them
