We used to have the Rag and Bone man every week when I lived in North London as well as a chap on a bike with a (wheel operated) knife sharpener fixed to it.

Currently (just started) we now have the Brand new white van flatbed truck kitted out with the sound system, same as Music's, first two months was manned by Romanians, now awfully posh people in jodpurhs and riding boots ?

Back in the day, we had the Rag and Bones Man with horse and cart, later it was just a hand cart
shouting Rags an Bones an Lumber along with his trumpet again giving kids balloons and rarely a gold fish.

Then we had the milkman, that was a horse and trap with a milk churn on the back, MILKO
MILKO and you went out with your jug, which was filled with the amount wanted

The Fruit and Veg horse and cart, where the man sold you an apple and you could feed his horse with it :-)

The RINGTONS tea horse and trap

Hand cart with knife, scissors and shear sharpening along with clothes pegs hand made

      The Onion Johnny

      Mobile shop for groceries
      Mobile Library
      Mobile Bank
      Mobile Fish n Chip van
Not forgetting the Multi ice cream vans

The new start up rag and bone man is good, you may not get cash but they do take away your stuff that the council now charge ten pounds per item, they also scavenge the streets removing the dumped fridges etc that people will not pay the council to take away

Mrs Shiney can go one better than that :heehee:

She used to live in India and they brought the milk to the door in the cow! :hate-shocked:

My mother got a "sample" orange peeler - nifty little gadget that one: looked a bit like something out of a manicure set and you could carve lines out of the peel and pull back the segments you made from joining up the lines :heehee:. The other one I recall was a toothpaste tube "squeezer" (you slipped it over the flat end and then turned it to squeeze the toothpaste out of the top).

Little things but the marketing value must have been good because ... I still remember them

My memory of the Rag and Bone man was, a hand drawn cart (we poor here in Northampton), He would come calling Ragnbone!!! and if you gave him anything (the kids were always sent out to him) you got a colouring book and wax crayons. Also the window cleaner pulled a hand cart with his ladders and a couple of buckets hanging off the side. This was early 1970's :yikes:

We now have a white transit van visit the area once a week, leave it out and off it go's..... lol

What is it with white vans? You would think they weren't produced in any other colour! :heehee:

Still got both of those :blue thumb: but we were posh and ours is a grapefruit peeler :snork:

I remember him coming round on a bike, ladder over his shoulder (with his arm through the rungs) and bucket hanging from the handlebars.

As that has now jogged my memory, I also remember the lamplighter on his bike with his ladder and, when things became more modern, on his bike with a lighting pole instead if a ladder. :old:

Yes, that's peculiar . All white vans seem to be just white! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

We had rag and bone men in the 50s and early 60s , you used to get a whitening stone for cleaning your front step - anyone remember them :blue thumb: Now its the white pick up coming round for scrap metal 3 or 4 times a week . Until you leave an old fridge on your drive , then they don't appear ! Old fridges are never a good look at the front of the house.

                        Simple solution:
Put a price tag on it.
Guaranteed it will get nicked overnight.
                        Problem solved.

I remember the Rag & Bone man well Much to the horror of my Mother I would cadge a ride while he went round the Circus (a circle of houses).. She would get very cross but I loved it & old Charley thought it very funny.. He used to shout.. "Rag-Bone" is a sing song way..

I remember the knife sharpener man, they had a "Bender" that they always pitched in the same place.. I seem to remember them a few times a year.. Yes the window cleaner & his bike ladder & pail...
The Chimney sweep too used to come on a bike with a homemade trailer towed behind too with his brushes strapped to the bike.. I always remember that as a big thing because of all the cleaning afterwards.. My Grannie would not believe they way they do it today..... :heehee:
Also when we lived down South there were the onion men too..
