Its annoying at Heleniums, Monarda, Crocosmia, Rudbeckia, Aquilegia, Gaillardia, Day Lilly all are doing really well, but maybe thats the proof i need. All of these are perennial and root system do not go that deep whilst tree's and shrubs do and thats the reason why they are struggling. My Magnolia took years to get going but now looks great with mulching.

There you go.....one of the trees that I tried to dig up was a Magnolia:) You'd think that a deep and fleshy-rooted plant like that would resent disturbance, but it went bananas once the soil was disturbed. Ditto a walnut tree! So, bring on the moles, ants, earthworms etc etc.... I'm too old to go trying to dig things up all the time:biggrin:

I have an S vilmorinii which was planted about 12-15 years ago and is approaching the size that my research suggested it would get to.

I pruned it for the first time this week and noticed that the SW facing side is growing much more strongly than the NE side. There are other plants and buildings nearby but nothing near enough to shade it or dry it sufficiently to cause that. The N side has got a little die back and overall sparser and weaker shoots. All sides are getting sun at some time of the day. I'd better go out and check the trunk after reading this thread.

I'm not that bothered if it pegs it as my garden is far too crowded and I think it turned out to be a poor choice anyway, I think there are far prettier sorbuses I could have chosen. I'd still probably miss it as a shade and privacy tree, though.

I planted a young 'Vilmorinii' early last year and dug it out two weeks ago it was almost dead. The only leaf growth this year was from the main stem not the branches.

I have sandy soil but I prepared the ground well before planting. I was told by the nursery it would grow in any soil and situation.......not in my garden! :doh:I must admit trees do struggle in my garden, I've lost a number of young ones I've planted and the Malus I planted five years ago has put on hardly any growth, it's the only tree in my garden! Shrubs do a lot better.
