In my youth I threw away a lot of stuff, which was worth keeping.
When I was about nine in an effort to make my room more tidy, I was given two cardboard boxes and told by my parents to sort out what stuff I was hoarding that I wanted to keep and put that in one and the rest in the other. My dad had given me over 100 metal regimental cap bages and I accidently put them in the wrong box! I realised too late and the bin men had taken them.

I remember when i was a wee lad ,about 9 yrs old my Grandmother who lived with us till she passed away
had a box which contained WW1 medals. my Grandfather and his two sons were killed in WW1. My Grandmother gave me these medals to play with,i played with them for years. we moved house's several times and these medals where lost in the moving, (sad). its sad when you think A Father and his two Sons
gave up their life's for their home and Country and the items to remember them were not treated with the respect they Deserved. :( A question, someone may know. I Remember a large metal (copper??) presentation in a box it would be about 6 inch across, it looked like a large medal if i remember correctly it had Britannia on one side ,the other side ,i cannot remember .

Could it have been a bronze 'death plaque'? Have a look at this - you'll need to scroll down a bit - but not far.

What a shame music. My brother recently managed to get a new set of my Dad's medals from WWII (my Dad never bothered to claim them orginally himself after WWII). There is a chance you can get replacements for your Grandad's, see this link here:

It would be worth investigating :thumb:

Thank You Very Much JWK i will look into the Medal Claiming, as i was very Successful in claiming my Dads Arctic Emblem. this was for the years he had spent on the North of The Arctic Circle and West of the Urals Between sept 1939 and may 1945, in the Merchant Navy
with supplies to Archangel, Russia, and various other ports in Russia. Initially i wrote to
Tony Blair ,his department did guide me on what route to take, to accomplish my ends.
This was Resolved after 2 years. I now wear the Arctic Emblem when the wife and i go out to a dance ,or whatever, hoping someone will ask me "What is that" ?? then i can tell them some of the stories my dad told me, which were very (HAIR RAISING) :halp:.

    music .
